- Graduate from High School or equivalent
- Must be in good health and capable of fulfilling assigned duties and tasks.
- Must be able and willing to learn new aspects of the job.
- Must possess effective human relation skills.
- Must have 48 college credits from an accredited college and/or two year degree and/or the ability to pass the state paraprofessional exam.
- Administers, scores, and records such achievement and diagnostic tests as the teacher recommends for individual students, if assigned duties.
- Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
- Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
- Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instruction purposes.
- Helps student’s utilize equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher.
- Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.
- Guides independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up and assigned by the teacher.
- Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
- Assists with such large group activities as drill work, reading aloud, and story-telling, if assigned duties.
- Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in other forms of oral communication with students.
- Assists students in the library or media center, if assigned duties.
- Checks notebooks, correct papers, and supervise testing and make-up work, as assigned by the teacher.
- Assists with breakfast, lunch, snack, and cleanup routines when appropriate.
- Assists with lifting, wash-up and toilet routines if applicable on any IEP’s.
- Alerts the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
- Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
- Maintains the same high level or ethical behavior or confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.
- Participates in in-service training programs as assigned.
- Aides may be assigned to specific areas such as Alternative classroom, Preschool, In School Suspension, Title, Special Education, Regular classroom, Library and health areas.
- Special Education children in Special Education class and resource room as assigned.
- Offers input into the development of educational individual plans for students as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal.
