About The Information

The Information was founded in late 2013 with a simple idea: write deeply reported articles about the technology industry that you won't find elsewhere. Since then, we've become a disruptor in business news that’s moved markets, gotten the early scoop on billions of dollars of acquisitions, and told you what's happening inside companies like Apple, Meta and Google. As a subscription-only publication, we aim high and take on challenging stories and adhere to the highest of journalistic standards. What we put into the work is just as in-depth as our output. We've attracted hundreds of thousands of active readers who look to us for breaking news stories and impactful features. As we look to expand our coverage in alignment with the needs of our subscribers, we continue to invest aggressively in our team.

About the roles:

The Information’s Weekend section is looking for reporters to produce deeply-reported feature stories on several key beats:

  • San Francisco Tech. Even as technology hubs proliferate across the globe, the San Francisco Bay Area remains the epicenter of the tech business. Its leaders and employees have reshaped the region in myriad ways, from its economy to its politics to its housing prices. Tech employers’ liberal work-from-policies and remote work products have also contributed to San Francisco’s record rate of empty offices and the struggles of its downtown to bounce back from the pandemic. And now the boom in local AI startups is injecting new energy into the city’s tech scene. We’re seeking an energetic Weekend reporter who knows the Bay Area and can write colorful stories and break news about the intersection of tech companies and the region many of the most important ones are based in. This position is based in San Francisco.

  • Vice/Dark Web/Cybercrime. Some of the most intriguing stories in technology are happening on its frontiers and in its darkest corners. Industries that are newly legal, such as online gambling and sports betting, are transforming media, including even Disney’s ESPN. Artificial intelligence is taking online pornography in concerning new directions with celebrity deep fakes. The Information’s Weekend section is looking for a reporter with a strong vision for what you might call our vice beat. This reporter will produce rich feature stories on everything from the commercial cannabis industry to 3-D printed weapons to gray and outright illegal online markets. The role presents an exciting opportunity for the right type of fearless journalist. You will shed light on the parts of the tech universe that need greater accountability while chronicling some of the most interesting characters in the 21st-century economy. This position is based in San Francisco or New York.

  • Kids and Tech. We’re seeking a reporter to produce deeply reported feature stories delving into the impact that technology is having on the lives of young adults, teenagers and children. Location tracking through smartphones, spy cams and social media apps that rank your friends are rewiring relationships, parenting and mental health, often in troubling ways. Proposals to ban smartphones in schools from academics like Jonathan Haidt could create new battlegrounds between educators and parents. Candidates for this position must be comfortable identifying and exploring these and similar topics, and writing colorful narratives about them loaded with human detail. This role offers a chance to hold the powerful in technology accountable for the products that end up in the hands of the youngest and most vulnerable among us while chronicling some of the most important and intriguing elements of 21st-century society. This position is based in San Francisco or New York.

Responsibilities:

  • Write several times a month for Weekend, a weekly section—both deeply reported long-read features and shorter stories.
  • Establish and cultivate relationships with trusted sources in technology.
  • Contribute to a great, welcoming team culture with high standards of journalism.

Qualifications:

  • A sizable track record at high-caliber publications. The ideal candidate will have experience covering these topics already, but we will consider promising candidates who show a strong desire to dive in and have the story ideas to prove it.
  • A vision for how to shape this beat, from the big narrative trend stories and profiles to smaller stories that advance your coverage.
  • A willingness to work closely with editors to craft high-impact stories living up to The Information’s brand of exclusive journalism. You should be comfortable being edited to the highest expectations of magazine-style journalism—and thrive on that type of collaboration.

Benefits:

  • Company-paid medical, dental and vision coverage for employees and their dependents
  • Basic life insurance
  • Generous paid leave that increases over time
  • A parental leave policy for new parents
  • 401(k) corporate match
  • Flexible Spending Account
  • Commuter benefits
  • A gym and fitness stipend
  • A highly professional, inclusive, diverse workplace with a zero-tolerance policy for harassment

Salary Range: $80,000–$160,000 USD Annually + Bonus + Benefits
