Position Summary
The Research Scientist conducts independent experimental studies and manages research projects and related budgets. This position communicates the results of scientific research through presentations, supervises undergraduate/graduate student researchers, and, maintains a safe and efficient work environment.
We are seeking candidates who have demonstrated ability to lead and/or work collaboratively in teams comprised of individuals of diverse backgrounds, skills, and perspectives.
This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position. *Exempt (salaried) positions under FLSA are not eligible for overtime.
Required Qualifications
PhD (or foreign equivalent degree) in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biomolecular Engineering or related field
Two (2) years of experience as a Graduate Assistant or Research Assistant in Chemistry
Must include experience in each of the following
Characterizing materials using techniques including XRD, XPS, and DRIFT
Authoring manuscripts and compiling reports to share research findings
The design, development, and implementation of experiments
Designing and implementing gas phase reaction setups
Essential Functions
Conduct academic research, including:
Design and develop new catalyst for vinyl acetate reaction
Understand the relation between structure and surface species on the vinyl acetate reaction microenvironment
Characterize materials using state of the art techniques like XRD, XPS, DRIFTS, RAMAN and XAS
Identify literature gaps for publication in the environmental remediation and chemical sustainability production areas
Design and develop operando lines for gas phase reactions attached to XRD and DRIFTS to a GC and MS systems
Write manuscripts
Write proposals
Mentor Masters and PhD students, including:
Have regular meetings to discuss specific projects and goals with the graduate students
Help the students to conduct experiments; train students to operate lab equipment
Revise manuscripts and presentations
Execute and complete Industry Sponsor Project on VAM Synthesis, including:
Have regular meetings with the Rice team and conduct the research to establish goals for the bi-weekly meetings
Prepare and conduct bi-weekly meetings with the industrial sponsors
Write Quarterly reports
Design and implement experiments for material surface and structure analysis
Performs all other duties as assigned
