Santa Clara County Behavioral Health Services

Researcher

Santa Clara County Behavioral Health Services San Jose, CA

Senior Researcher and Evaluator Position

The Behavioral Health Department of the County of Santa Clara is seeking an experienced researcher and evaluator to join their talented group of researchers and data analysts. The Department serves approximately 30,000 beneficiaries each year who suffer from mental health and substance abuse issues. These individuals are among the most vulnerable members of our society.

The research group supports clinical and managerial work with analytic products that range from basic descriptive statistics on program processes and outcomes to dashboards to more complex statistical analyses. Examples of current projects include the application of logit models and machine learning techniques to analyze program access and program success to glean insights into factors that promote and hinder departmental goals. We have another machine learning project that seeks to distill complex assessment data (e.g. a 60-item assessment that is administered multiple times during the course of treatment) to determine whether or not a course of treatment improved a beneficiary’s condition. Several more traditional program evaluations are in our work queue and will be conducted as our group’s capacity expands.

The ideal candidate will be an inquisitive self-starter with demonstrable experience conducting program evaluations and other analytic projects. Candidates should have a Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in Business Administration, Biostatistics, Criminal Justice, Epidemiology, Health Services, Public Administration, Public Health, Public Policy, Social Work, Social Sciences, Statistics, or a related field.

Our current needs are for a quantitative researcher, though we would be interested in someone who is experienced with mix-methods evaluations. Experience with behavioral health programs and electronic health records is a plus, though not essential. Our group works with Stata, SQL, Microsoft PowerBI, and R. Experience with these programs is a plus but not essential.

The link for the official job description for the position is at the end of this post. The County does not currently have an active search for the position, but I am authorized to make a provisional hire until the official search is released. The provisional hire will be required to compete in the official search once it is opened.

If you have any questions about the position, please contact Dr. Christopher Weare @ 213-280-5331 or Christopher.weare@hhs.sccgov.org. If you would like to submit an application, please download an application at the link below, fill it out online, print out a copy, and email it to Christopher Weare at Christopher.weare@hhs.sccgov.org
