Senior Manager, Digital Fundraising

How You’ll Contribute

The Advancement team identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards individuals, as well as foundation, government, and corporate partners who invest in the Society to drive impact through science, technology, education, exploration, and storytelling. The team collaborates across the Society – and often works closely with NGP/Disney – to build transformative and impact-driven strategic partnerships. The team also produces global events that deepen connections and leverage the Society’s power to convene, and directs robust annual, major, and planned giving programs empowering the Society with a broad base of public support.

The Annual Giving and Membership (AGM) team manages a high impact fundraising and stewardship program through integrated and data-driven marketing and communications campaigns across multiple channels. The Senior Manager, Digital Fundraising is responsible for leading and managing the digital fundraising program to meet growing revenue goals for the National Geographic Society across email, web, digital ads,, and other digital channels to acquire, retain, and reactivate donors at both the membership level and mid-level, while helping to steward and inspire current donors.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include

Lead and Manage Robust and Innovative Digital Fundraising Program (60%)

  • Manage all aspects of the digital fundraising program in support of lead generation, acquisition, retention, and reactivation goals in collaboration with internal and external partners to meet long- and short-term targets.
  • Serve as lead digital fundraising liaison with internal enterprise-wide partners (such as Communications, IT, and Strategic Insights, among others) as well with NGP’s digital, social, marketing, etc. and with external vendors to develop, implement, and optimize digital campaigns that promote donor acquisition and engagement in support of increasing revenue goals.
  • Serve as a partner to internal teams in developing strategic digital plans for the Society that optimize fundraising and stewardship in support of overall donor and revenue goals.
  • Collaborate with AGM program leads to create and implement the annual digital calendar and strategies to establish regular cadence of member communication and a robust plan for digital acquisition using display advertising, email, SMS, third-party promotions, paid search, e-appends, and other types of digital acquisition.
  • Lead internal and external partners in the development of integrated digital campaigns, writing and designing content as needed.
  • Lead the alignment and integration of digital strategies and tactics with print and other direct marketing campaigns in collaboration with the larger AGM team as well as throughout the Advancement department.
  • Collaborate with the NGS Communications and marketing team to ensure fundraising appeals are aligned with Society priorities and brand requirements.
  • Research and build expertise of current and emerging fundraising technologies across all aspects of digital fundraising/marketing and make recommendations for program innovations.


Create and Implement Online Stewardship and Cultivation Plans (20%)

  • In collaboration with AGM program leads, support the execution of online stewardship and cultivation plans for donors and email subscribers, including broad engagement emails, personalized mid-level communications, integrated and interest-driven e-newsletters, welcome series, special announcements, etc. to recognize donors, communicate gratitude, and demonstrate impact of donations.
  • Manage the execution of stewardship emails and digital engagement in collaboration with other Advancement teams for other donor and VIP audiences as needed.
  • Research and propose innovations in digital stewardship to continually innovate and improve communications that deepen engagement with NGS’s mission.


Manage Program Analysis and Digital Testing Plan (10%)

  • Analyze effectiveness of digital fundraising campaigns and digital presence and help establish NGS benchmarks and compare performance to industry benchmarks.
  • Monitor and interpret program KPIs, revenue and engagement data, trends, successes, and outcomes and share timely, proactive, and ongoing results and insights with team and other key colleagues.
  • Manage testing plan and roadmap to optimize digital fundraising program and meet revenue, engagement, and other goals.
  • Oversee tracking and reconciliation of gifts between systems to ensure data is accurate and donor intent is followed.


Manage Digital Fundraising Collateral and Digital Donation Experience (10%)

  • Oversee regular audits of digital fundraising collateral to ensure evergreen content is continually monitored and refreshed to ensure the best digital user experience.
  • Oversee, update and optimize the Society’s digital (donation & email sign-up) form pages including recommending and implementing continual upgrades and innovations.
  • Partner with Advancement Operations and external vendors to ensure the digital fundraising program is effectively, efficiently, and creatively utilizing both existing and new functionality to continually enhance and improve user experience.

What You’ll Bring

Educational Background

Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Minimum Years And Type Of Experience

7+ years digital marketing/fundraising experience with demonstrated expertise on current and emerging trends in digital fundraising and constituent engagement.

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Proven donor/member strategy and communications skills, including experience in creating effective digital and omnichannel campaigns and writing for email, mobile, website, digital ads, and social media.
  • Innovative and willing to take risks while maintaining focus on protecting the brand.
  • Excellent strategist able to leverage data to increase results.
  • Creative and outstanding fundraising writer and content developer.
  • Must be detail-oriented, highly organized, and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a goal- and deadline-oriented team environment.
  • Must be service- and solutions-oriented with strong relationship management and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical skills, including ability to gather and analyze a variety of information and develop appropriate recommendations for action.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and work with minimum of instruction and supervision when necessary.
  • Ability to maintain high standards of confidentiality and professional integrity.
  • Competency in word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software (MS Office or Google Workspace) required.


Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge, Engaging Networks, or other fundraising and email platforms, CRM, or database preferred.
  • Candidates with experience working for or with external consultants preferred.
  • Ability to relate to people of diverse backgrounds, training, and experience.
  • Possess a growth mindset and high emotional intelligence.

Salary Information

National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar sized nonprofit organizations.

The salary range for this position is $99,000 -$120,000.

Job Designation

Remote - Our Remote designation includes staff who must work in another location in the U.S. or abroad, such as our regional leads for our Education and International teams or regional fundraisers in Advancement. Staff may also be designated as Remote by their supervisors (with approval by the Senior Team lead) because of their job duties, and are afforded this status when it is beneficial to NGS, their respective team, and the employee.
