Zero Carbon Systems, Inc. is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join a fast-growing, flexible team that’s trying to address the most pressing issue of our time – climate change. This position will be responsible for supporting the engineering development and validation of process equipment for a Direct Air Capture (DAC) unit. The pilot will be leveraged to refine the design for the scale-up to our full-scale facility, which will follow soon thereafter.


Responsibilities, Tasks and Outcomes:

● Manage and execute full life cycles of process development (conceptual design, initial design, detailed design, construction, commissioning, operation)

● Identify deficiencies in mechanical processes and develop improvements

● Design, develop/manufacture, and analyze prototypes and revisions of equipment

● Support installs of owned equipment (FAT, SAT, IQ, OQ)

● Prepare documentation of critical analysis and providing suggestions for correcting errors

● Provide mechanical continuous improvement support for existing manufacturing systems

● Conduct experiments and data analysis to improve and iterate on system designs.

● Lead and oversee CFD projects from conception to completion, ensuring high-quality simulations and Validate/verify simulation results through comparison with experimental data.

● Write technical documentation (Equipment SOPs) for machine operators.

● Interface with project managers as well as external vendors to complete technology transfer to new sites on schedule, with high quality

● Support the transition and scaling of new development projects into factory production

● Analyze test and evaluate theoretical designs and hold design reviews

● Identify, formulate and produce effective solutions to emerging problems

● Evaluate pilot / production equipment’s overall performance, reliability and safety

● Alter and modify design to meet requirements and to eliminate malfunctions

● Estimate budget and scope of project

● Prepare engineering reports and documentation

● Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to deliver detailed technical presentations in support of engineering reviews

● Listen actively and proactively, raises concerns while recommending solutions


Minimum Qualifications and Skills

● Bachelor’s degree in mechanical / chemical / industrial engineering with 8 years or more of direct hands-on experience in mechanical systems design, process equipment design or similar role

● Strong working knowledge with at least 5 years of experience in most (if not all) of the following strongly preferred:

○ Autodesk Inventor Professional 2022

○ Autodesk AutoCAD 2022

○ Autodesk Plant 3D

○ Autodesk Nastran or Ansys

● Proficient in industry standard CFD software (e.g., ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL Multiphysics, Autodesk CFD, SimScale) for simulation and result analysis

● Experience with large mechanical motion systems, heat pumps, air handling and vacuum systems

● Ability and experience to run FEA and analyze test data

● Ability to write clear and comprehensive technical documentation including machine SOPs, BOMs, and technical engineering drawings

● Working experience with product lifecycle management (PLM) strongly preferred

● Hands-on experience with computer-aided engineering (CAE) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM)

● Familiarity with engineering design and manufacturing tools (P&ID, PFD, BOM Generation, ECOs etc.)

● Solid understanding of core concepts including fluid dynamics, mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science with working knowledge designing equipment with above concepts

● Ability to communicate technical knowledge in a clear and understandable manner

● Knowledge of polymer/plastics and metal fabrication methods and techniques

● Ability to shift tasks and project quickly depending on changing company goals and directions ● Experience with building design and structural analysis

● Startup experience and ability to work on cross-functional teams
