Qualifications
The Senior Piping Designer requires providing conceptual and detailed design of piping systems & components used during project execution of industrial plant design.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Piping Designer does not have direct supervisory responsibilities but will coordinate and oversee detail piping engineering of outside groups.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Mentor and give direction to other designers and contract personnel.
  • Utilize CAD software to create mechanical drawings for the basic and detailed engineering of a Midrex plant.
  • Layout of piping systems, pipe routing, equipment, and utility systems for industrial projects.
  • Utilize P&IDs to design piping routings, and check designs from others.
  • Be proficient in the use of AutoCAD software and related Autodesk products.
  • Take conceptual designs, sketches, and ideas from engineers and senior designers to develop the details necessary for a complete, engineered drawing capable of being used for purchasing, erection in the field, design analysis, etc.
  • Work with outside engineering firms to coordinate detailed piping engineering on large projects.
  • Create bill of materials based on piping design and isometrics.
  • Travel to job sites to perform analyses of existing equipment, piping routes, layouts, etc. for use in developing future plans, proposals, etc.
  • Travel on business trips and/or field assignments as required to carry out departmental tasks and functions.
  • Perform checking of mechanical drawings for consistency with conceptual ideas, design, sketches, etc.
  • Assist senior designers and engineers by suggesting design changes that might improve the desired results of the design.
  • Work as a teammate with all company departments and employees in all assignments. Work toward building consensus on all assignments by finding solutions which meet the best interests of all parties involved.

Skills/Abilities:
Required:
  • Advanced computer skills including use of Microsoft and Autodesk products.
  • Microsoft Excel skills including pivot tables and developing lists for engineering.
  • Be proficient in AVEVA 3D modeling design software or equivalent and techniques.
  • Be proficient in use of AutoCAD software.
  • Excellent technical writing and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to meet schedule and deliverable deadlines.
  • Extensive knowledge of pipe, pipe fittings, valves, piping supports, and insulation used in various industrial applications.
  • Ability to read and understand piping isometrics.
  • Ability to supervise field erection activities including supplying technical and installation assistance for piping systems used in DR and/or steel industry.

Preferred:
  • Knowledge of piping design including but not limited to stress analysis.
  • International travel experience.
  • Industrial plant experience.

Education and Experience:
  • Associate Degree in mechanical discipline and ten years of hands-on experience in a technical environment, or a minimum of fifteen years of hands-on experience in a technical environment.

Travel Requirements:
  • Up to 10% International and Domestic based upon project demands

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to climb pipe racks and open structures
