Base pay range

$175,000.00/yr - $210,000.00/yr
As the senior private credit research consultant at Callan, a leading independent investment consulting firm, you’ll help lead Callan’s private credit research efforts. Reporting to the head of the Alternatives Consulting group, you’ll advise clients on all aspects of private credit investing and collaborate with colleagues on your team and throughout Callan. You’ll also proactively lead and implement initiatives for process and workflow improvement.

You’ll work with some of the highest quality and most complex clients in the country to help them achieve their investment goals, including corporate and public retirement plans, endowments and foundations, taxable trusts, and insurance assets. Please note: This position will be based in one of Callan’s six offices, working a hybrid schedule.

Primary Duties

Team Leadership

  • Lead private credit client relationships, including manager research and portfolio implementation
  • Help lead Callan’s efforts to proactively identify promising private credit investment opportunities, including middle market direct lending, specialty finance, distressed debt, and related areas, as well as hedge funds (e.g., long/short credit; distressed credit) and “alternative credit” strategies (e.g., structured credit; opportunistic credit)
  • Present private credit investment recommendations and advice to client fiduciary boards and staff, and respond to ad-hoc client requests
  • Lead weekly team meetings, proactively identifying areas in need of attention and following through with individuals responsible for the completion of tasks (i.e., the analyst group)


Manager Sourcing and Due Diligence

  • Conduct in-depth research on strategies across the private credit universe and help coordinate research efforts with other members of the alternatives consulting team
  • Oversee the quantitative performance analysis process conducted by the team’s analysts
  • Update Callan’s proprietary databases with meeting notes, due diligence reports, and other relevant research information
  • Provide timely responses to inbound investment manager communication


Strategic Planning

  • Work with the head of Alternatives Consulting and the Capital Markets Research group to help develop and improve Callan’s private credit capital markets assumptions and portfolio construction methodology
  • Present investment recommendations to the group and Callan’s Alternatives Review Committee


Marketing/Business Development

  • Participate in developing new business opportunities and work with general consultants to expand existing relationships to include private credit and/or alternatives consulting
  • Represent Callan at industry conferences and lead panel discussions relating to private credit investing


Research/Education

  • Create and deliver educational presentations for Callan Institute webinars and events
  • Develop educational content (e.g., white papers and blog posts) related to private markets topics

  • Positively contribute to the intellectual capital and culture of the team and Callan
  • Work constructively with colleagues in the group and across the broader organization
  • Utilize Callan’s internal committees to ensure client recommendations and deliverables are of consistently high quality


Job Skills & Requirements

Experience and Education:

  • Over 10 years of investment/financial industry expertise
  • Significant experience in a senior private credit research/consulting role
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Graduate degree or relevant professional certification preferred (CFA and/or CAIA designation)
