Incumbent should reside within the Arvest 4 State Footprint (AR, KS, MO, OK). Position requires availability Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm with additional hours as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Small Business lending loan experience

Job Title: SBU Underwriter

The SBU (Small Business Underwriting) Underwriter evaluates, underwrites, and approves small business loan requests that fall under the defined description of small business lending. They review business and personal financial statements along with tax returns of potential borrowers and their guarantors to determine creditworthiness and approve or decline transactions based on current policies and guidelines. The SBU Underwriter serves as a resource to the frontline lending staff and other shared services divisions related to underwriting analysis and escalates policy exception requests to management for review. They work to meet team Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and maintain a working knowledge of departmental procedures, forms, and Arvest Loan Policy.

What You’ll Do at Arvest: (Other duties may be assigned.)


  • Review and evaluate small business loan transaction requests in accordance with federal and state laws and regulations. Understand all Small Business Administration (SBA) products and guidelines.
  • Analyze a variety of business and financial statements, including income statements and balance sheets, to determine loan structure, collateral, cash flow, and business and personal global debt serviceability. Utilize credit scoring software and personal and business credit reports to support the underwriting and approval process. Provide decision requests within established SLAs.
  • Play a key role in special projects and initiatives as requested.
  • Identify additional information requirements needed to properly assess risks and consider alternative credit structures for small business loan requests based on financial strength and loan purpose.
  • Review income and employment verification, including complex federal tax returns and trust agreements. Calculate common underwriting ratios, including loan-to-value (LTV), debt-to-income (DTI) and payment-to-income (PTI), in accordance with current policy and procedures.
  • Review declined loan requests and/or exceptions to policy and escalate required declinations to the SBU Underwriting Supervisor.
  • Understand and comply with bank policy, laws, regulations, and the bank's BSA/AML Program, as applicable to your job duties. This includes but is not limited to; complete compliance training and adhere to internal procedures and controls; report any known violations of compliance policy, laws, or regulations and report any suspicious customer and/or account activity.


Toolbox for Success:


  • Associate’s degree or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 3 years of experience in lending, accounting, or underwriting functions.
  • Working knowledge of accounting terminology and principles.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google Workspace or equivalent.
  • Relevant military experience is considered for veterans and transitioning service members.


Preferred:


  • Small Business lending loan experience.


Physical Demands:
