The Social Sustainability VISTAs will assist the other VISTAs and library staff with development of outreach/marketing plans; and the development of model programs/services with our current VISTA programming: Healthy Futures (health screenings, education programming, working on expanding community and library LGBTQ resources, opioid training): STREAM (working with all ages); Veterans and Military Families to help strategically with capacity building and strengthen successful interconnections with these VISTA programs and the library partners. We currently have social workers coming to many of our libraries. One goal is to identify the individuals or families needing mental health and medical assistance, as well as re-entry support services, financial literacy opportunities, mediation and other supports for career enhancement so the library can be pro-active in responding and connecting them to resources. The VISTA member will spend a few months becoming familiar with the programs and then assist Delaware Libraries in developing enhanced services by strategically working with current and developing new partnerships in financial, work, social service and public health organizations. This VISTA will have a real impact on the state.

Member Duties : Review the current VISTA programs and resources in the libraries. Will look at development systems necessary for the program implementations with current needs. The VISTA member will continue to develop and implement training, tools, events, resources, and services to mobilize volunteers and other community members to provide information/programming to the underserved communities with a special emphasis on social sustainability by building a stronger social service component to all the libraries. A strong component of the success of the project is the ability of the VISTA to sustain the initiatives and to design processes to capture meaningful outcome data and stories beyond just attendance. It can be daunting for libraries to explore ways to facilitate that connection- this is the role of this VISTA. Research has shown that the libraries who connect their underserved patrons with additional services observed measurable positive changes in their libraries and communities.
