Job Summary

The Staff Research Associate I position is with the Stress Trauma and Resilience Lab (STAR Lab), a clinical research program affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the San Francisco VA Medical Center. The STAR Lab conducts research aimed at understanding risk and resilience for PTSD and developing novel treatments for individuals who have been exposed to traumatic events, such as war, life-threatening accidents, illnesses, or disasters. Our team also focuses on the impact of traumatic stress on the body, by studying physiological responses, endocrine and immune function, sleep, and reproductive health.

Individuals who are referred to our program will be asked to participate in one of several research studies. Should they agree, at intake they will take part in a comprehensive assessment. Individuals may participate in treatment studies in which they will be asked to complete an assessment after each of 5 treatment sessions. At each stage of treatment, assessments are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment, to determine whether more treatment is recommended, and to develop a plan to meet treatment goals.

The Staff Research Associate I will assist with all levels of research data collection and management.

Under the supervision of the Research Director, the SRA I will provide active research support to clinical research team by 1) helping to organize and obtain research consent (2%); 2) helping to administer research questionnaires (2%); 3) reviewing data to ensure completeness of research protocol (20%); and 4) scoring research data (20%). The SRA I will also provide administrative research support by 1) assisting with IRB reviews and study approvals (2%); 2) maintaining, cleaning, and ordering research supplies (2%); 3) maintaining physical research lab space (5%); 4) orienting new clinical research staff on research protocol (1%); 5) greeting participants and preparing them for the research protocol (5%); and 6) track inventory of research supplies (5%). The SRA I will provide long-term research data maintenance by 1) assisting with file review, data cleaning of past and current data (5%); b) tracking and organizing participant files in various research databases corresponding to different research studies (10%); c) organization of different data mediums including questionnaire data, media data, interview tapes, test scores (10%); and d) perform routine data cleaning procedures in REDCap (5%). The SRA I will help with dissemination of research data by: 1) providing research literature reviews (2%); 2) help with manuscript preparation and editing (2%); 3) participating in research team meetings to generate and collaborate on new and ongoing research studies (2%).

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Psychology, Statistics or in a related science; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with data entry and management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated excellence in reliability and attendance.
  • Basic competence in methodologies of psychological research.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of working with people who experienced trauma
  • Knowledge of coding of psychological measures
  • Experience with publications and report writing
  • Prior related UC experience.
  • Knowledge of psychophysiological measurement
