Staff Writer

The diaTribe Foundation is seeking a full-time science and health staff writer experienced in reporting on diabetes research and news for a general audience.


The writer must have experience in health and science reporting and be comfortable producing stories about diabetes research, medications, technology, complications, and nutrition. Having a portfolio of published work is a requirement for this position.


The writer will primarily produce stories for diaTribe’s flagship publication, diaTribe Learn. We seek to empower our readers with useful, actionable information that gives them hope for a better future, and helps them live happier and healthier lives. Our tagline is “Making Sense of Diabetes.”

This position requires three days per week in our San Francisco office and requires travel to a handful of diabetes conferences each year, both in the US and internationally.


The staff writer has overall accountability and responsibility for:

  • Researching, writing, and producing high-quality stories that reflect our mission and learning areas. Quick turnaround, daily story production will sometimes be required.
  • Working on breaking and longer-term stories simultaneously. The ability to prioritize and organize your work in a fast-paced editorial environment is a must.
  • Working with the managing editor and senior staff to shape the strategy and direction of all our coverage to expand subscriptions, website visitors, reader impact, and engagement.


Key responsibilities Include:

  • Delivering value to our readers and enhancing the reach and impact of our stories
  • Using our metrics to improve our reach and engagement
  • Writing, developing, and pitching articles for diaTribe Learn
  • Working to optimize articles for search functions


Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Excellent writing skills and mastery of AP Style
  • Previously published
  • Broad medical and/or science journalism background
  • Able to understand, assess, and advise on the medical, social, political, and economic aspects of the health care system in general, and diabetes and obesity specifically as it impacts society and patients
  • Ability to discuss complex scientific and technical subjects with experts, investigators, and KOLs
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a variety of individuals, including staff, advisory board members, colleagues, medical reviewers, and authors
  • Familiarity with publication software, SEO, and social media
  • Knowledge of diabetes
