JOB DESCRIPTION

Under the guidance of the Pharmacy Manager and Director of Pharmacy Operations, the Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor will oversee the operations of the central pharmacy department and ensure safe and efficient delivery of pharmaceutical services. The position will lead the pharmacy technicians and interns, providing guidance and support to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations. The Pharmacy Supervisor is essential in maintaining high standards of patient care while managing workflows and prioritizing tasks within the pharmacy. In addition, the supervisor will perform personnel management actives, lead customer service and performance improvement initiatives, and assist the with financial management activities. The Supervisor is expected to demonstrate effectiveness as a leader and as a role model through efficient time management, effective organization of work and prioritization. Emphasis should be placed on creating a positive environment that fosters professional growth and retention.

Job Requirements

Associate's Degree, Healthcare, business, science, etc.

Equivalent experience accepted in lieu of degree

5-7 years experience Technical, Pharmacy

Experience must be inpatient hospital pharmacy..

National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) is required. The current approved examinations are the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PCTB) or Except Certification by the National Health career Association.

Must be registered with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy as a Certified Pharmacy Technician.

Job Responsibilities

Service

  • Provides ongoing oversight of daily pharmacy functions and operations to assure that the inpatient pharmacy runs smoothly and the department meets demands for services in an accurate and timely manner. Addresses operational opportunities and issues as they present themselves.
  • Monitors the progress of assignments and performance of daily responsibilities for all direct reports. Ensures technicians follow the technical aspects of Inpatient Pharmacy drug distribution activities to ensure standard operating procedures are in alignment with automation capabilities so that efficiencies are maximized.
  • Directs and supervises the Lead Pharmacy Technician and Automation Technician tasks. Oversees training and receives feedback on team member training and progress. Approves pharmacy technician role responsibilities and shift duties for all shifts within inpatient pharmacy.
  • Assures the delivery of quality department services in accordance with established hospital and regulatory/accreditation agency standards.
  • Directly supervises Pharmacy Technicians and Interns.
  • Promptly addresses customer service issues and provides service recovery.
  • Addresses issues with environmental services.
  • On-call rotation for issues related to staffing or support for challenging circumstances.

Finance

  • Monitors, develops and maintains expenses within approved budgeted guidelines by working with the pharmacy team. Limits the use of agency technicians and overtime in order to stay within budget.
  • Maximize cost effectiveness of the Pharmacy by leading the team in identifying cost containment and cost savings initiatives.
  • Responsible for overseeing the variances with the technician’s hours to minimize overtime while maintaining optimal patient care.
  • Develop systems to improve staff productivity and workload efficiency.
  • Directs Automation technician and Omnicell on-site technicians, including optimization and inventory management of pharmacy automation and automated dispensing cabinets.

Quality/Safety

  • Ensures that department standards of work and established role responsibilities (outdate checking, inventory control, etc) are followed on a day-to-day basis. Prepares new standards of work, as necessary.
  • Recommends and implements changes for the improvement of the workflow involved within the drug distribution system.
  • Ensures that technicians clean and provide regular maintenance of equipment to minimize downtime
  • Promotes a safe working environment by proactively identifying potential safety hazards within the workplace and initiating appropriate work orders. Addresses safety issues on a continual basis with the staff.
  • Promotes controlled substance accountability and security for site and off-site locations. Ensures that team members adhere to all controlled substance dispensing and policies and procedures. Monitors controlled substance accountability records to identify questionable circumstances or unusual trends. Immediately informs the Inpatient Pharmacy manager and Medication Diversion Prevention Team of all unresolved and/or suspicious discrepancies and of any activities that deviate from approved policies and procedures.
  • Works with vendors, specifically pharmacy automation vendors on optimization, downtime, and maintenance. Monitors work of vendor/contracted employees.
  • Attends and actively participates in site leadership huddles, business unit leader meetings, and other system-level development meetings as scheduled

People

  • Routinely rounds on direct reports.
  • Responsible for hiring Pharmacy team members by utilizing behavioral and peer interviewing techniques.
  • Onboards, sets up/coordinates access to all pharmacy systems, trains, orients and oversees new Pharmacy Technicians.
  • Responsible for the preparation and assignment of department staff's work schedules and assignments. Arranges for coverage for absences.
  • Completes/administers performance evaluations and ensures adherence to the corporate plan for completion of performance evaluations.
  • Provides coaching, mentoring, and motivation to team members for a higher level of performance. Escalates to performance counseling and up to termination when improvement is not seen.
  • Validates and ensures team member compliance with licenses, certification, continuing education, and departmental/corporate training.
  • Payroll activities including verifying, editing, and signoff.

Growth/Innovation

  • Encourages direct report participation in developing goals and objectives and establishing policy, procedures and practice standards needed to assure consistent quality care.
  • Oversees pharmacy projects that expand pharmacy services, efficiencies, and optimization.

Other Job-Related Information

Compounded Sterile Preparations Pharmacy Specialty Certification (BCSCP). Must receive certification within (2) two years of hire and maintain certification while in position.
