Tour Manager, National Geographic Live

How You’ll Contribute

The National Geographic Live (Nat Geo Live) team brings the stories of National Geographic to life through unique experiences. We partner with National Geographic explorers and photographers to unpack their stories and build them into compelling narratives, and then enable the content to be effectively delivered to audiences across the planet. The team works with internal partners to ensure that National Geographic Society’s advancement and explorer elevation goals are supported by Nat Geo Live programs. The current primary businesses of Nat Geo Live are its touring Speaker Series, public performances hosted in theaters and performing arts centers, and its Speakers Bureau, which provides speakers to private audiences.

The Tour Manager will report to the Director of Operations for National Geographic Live and will manage the advancement and execution of all aspects of NG Live’s agreements with tour venues/clients, acting as the National Geographic brand’s representative while on tour to our venue partners, talent, and audiences. This position requires extensive travel up to 75% of the time.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include

Event Advancement and Execution (75%)

  • Book and coordinate travel and hotel for National Geographic Live and Speakers Bureau speakers, plus team members and leadership as needed
  • Advance tour requirements with local presenters prior to arrival and sign off upon arrival that requirements are met. Work with local presenters and speakers on-site to solve any issues that may arise
  • Travel to and attend all assigned rehearsals and performances, ensuring availability to speakers during all rehearsal and show hours
  • Assist with the planning and execution of Society events on location
  • Introduce speakers on-stage and host post-show question and answer sessions as needed
  • Facilitate post show audience meet and greets with speakers
  • Ensure proper execution of retail set-up at pre-identified tour venues
  • Arrange performance tickets for guests of the speaker, Society VIPS, and staff


Budget Management (15%)

  • Audit engagement documents, performance box office statements and finalize the settlement at each venue the tour plays
  • Exercise budget discipline by making cost-effective decisions and carefully monitoring all road expenses to adhere to established budgets
  • Reconcile, process and review road expenses in a timely manner
  • Coordinate with Director of Operations to ensure timely receipt of venue payments


Communication + Collaboration (10%)

  • Liaise with internal and external marketing teams to ensure all venue requests are met and implemented, and that appropriate industry resources (including websites like Pollstar) are kept up to date
  • Represent the Society onsite with VIPs and special guests at the performances
  • Develop and manage effective working relationships with all speakers and venues to ensure smooth daily running of the productions


What You’ll Bring

Educational Background

Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Minimum Years And Type Of Experience

5+ years in touring theatrical company management or entertainment tour management

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Astute attention to detail
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and multitask while under tight deadlines
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate well with all levels
  • Ability to successfully work within a highly collaborative team environment
  • Firm grasp of theatrical industry standards and practices
  • Comfortable speaking on stage in front of large audiences
  • Proven ability to remain composed and adaptable in last-minute emergencies, demonstrating exceptional patience and determination to resolve issues promptly and efficiently
  • Flexibility to attend evening and weekend events, as well as travel domestically or internationally for extended periods


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience managing logistics of touring theatrical events from inception to completion for domestic and international talent and events
  • Experience implementing and optimizing budgets against actuals
  • Familiarity with Tessitura and other standard Box Office management systems, Google Office, Microsoft Office Suite, Keynote and Adobe is desired


Salary Information

National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar sized nonprofit organizations.

The salary range for this position is $71,200 - $78,700.

Job Designation

Remote - Our Remote designation includes staff who must work in another location in the U.S. or abroad, such as our regional leads for our Education and International teams or regional fundraisers in Advancement. Staff may also be designated as Remote by their supervisors (with approval by the Senior Team lead) because of their job duties, and are afforded this status when it is beneficial to NGS, their respective team, and the employee.
