Job Description
General Description:
Functions under the administrative guidance of the shift supervisor or manager to provide services to patients. Under the clinical direction of the Physician, collects and conveys information to physician and licensed nurse regarding the health status of patients.
The Transport Paramedic will function as a team member providing care and transportation to all patients that are served by Oklahoma Children’s Hospital. The Paramedic is required to maintain the readiness of equipment, availability of supplies and complete related paperwork.
In addition to caring for the patients in the pre-hospital environment, the transport paramedic will be part of the care delivery to the patients at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital during non-transport times. The Transport paramedic will assist in the delivery of care in the NICU, PICU, Pediatric ED, or any other area, noting that the Transport Paramedic’s first responsibility is to transport, and they must be made available to leave the facility within target timelines.
Outreach activities are also an integral part of the Transport Paramedic role. These may include education of regional providers, public relations activities, and other quality activities.

High school or GED required. Associates or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience
Three (3) years of job related experience (4000 hours) as a paramedic in a position providing Advanced Life Support required. Acute care/emergency setting experience with pediatric patients, preferred.

- Carries out treatment plan in collaboration with the patient’s healthcare team.
- Administers NRP/BLS/ACLS/PALS in accordance with defined guidelines or accordance to medical direction.
- Timely and appropriate documentation of care rendered.
- Assists with inter-facility and intra-facility transfers of patients and attends to personal needs of patients/families with each transport.
- Functions as a professional representative of the Oklahoma Children’s Hospital Transport Program on every shift.
- Maintains and provides upkeep of OCH ambulances, transport equipment, and supplies on a shift basis.
- Performs and assists with assessment and vital signs as directed.
- Performs patient care including insertion of vascular access and airway management
- Contributes information to the licensed nurse for the development and modification of the patient's plan of care.
- Assists with the licensed nurse in delivering and documenting care provided to the patient.
- Provides for patient safety.
- Responsible for responding to requests for transport with all of Oklahoma Children’s Hospital ground and air vehicles, record keeping, data entry, and clerical support as assigned.
- Responsible for ongoing development of the Oklahoma Children’s Hospital transport program by attending and participating in meetings, in-services, committees, outreach efforts and taking on and completing projects as assigned.
- Operates a ground ambulance in accordance with applicable Oklahoma Statutes and Regulations of the Oklahoma State Department of Health and all Federal rules and regulations.
- Provides for patient safety and acts as a safety officer over operations involving movement of the patient once loaded onto the stretcher/isolette until offloaded at the receiving facility.
- Completes and documents OCH ambulance safety inspections at the beginning of each shift.
- Stocks and maintains the vehicles and their contents in a state of readiness at all times. Maintains the building and its contents. Maintains documentation of the same.
- Participates in Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement programs as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.

Licensure And Certifications
- National Registry of Paramedics Certification required
- Current license issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Health as a Paramedic required
- Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License required
- BLS – Basic Life Support required upon hire
- ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support required within six months of hire
- PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support required within six months of hire
- NRP certifications required within six months of hire
- Advanced certification specializing in Neonatal and Pediatric Transport obtained within 24 months of hire.
- Advanced certification specializing in Flight obtained within 24 months of hire.
- Emergency Vehicle Operators Course required to complete orientation and refresher every three years thereafter.
- Knowledge of basic hospital policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of medical terminology. Knowledge of office procedures and equipment.
- Skilled in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to type accurately.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with emphasis on providing customer service to internal and external customers.
- Good computer skills with familiarity and/or ability to learn Microsoft Office, Teletracking and other software applications.
- Knowledge of commonly used hospital based computer programs would be helpful.
- Ability to accurately utilize prehospital patient charting software.
- Ability to relay information accurately and concisely.
- Ability to work closely with multiple disciplines in the healthcare setting.
- Ability to successfully handle multiple tasks.
