Job Description

The Lithium-Ion Battery Supply Chain Team provides technical support to collect data on companies and facilities in North America involved in raw materials production; battery materials processing; electrode, cell, components, and pack manufacturing; end-of-life management and recycling; and service and support facilities (e.g., research, modeling, distributors repair, and professional services) in North America. The database can be found at https://www.nrel.gov/transportation/li-ion-battery-supply-chain-database.html.

The team members are from Energy Conversion and Storage Systems Center and Computational Science Center and Web Development Group at NREL. The landscape for LIB supply chain is dynamic and fast-changing due to the increasing LIB demand for Electric Vehicle and Grid,

The team is looking for an intern who will continue to update, improve, and expand the database with information about new companies and facilities.

The successful candidate will

  • Learn from the Team on the li-ion battery technology and its various market segments.
  • Search the web and use other resources to find new companies and facilities to added since the last database release.
  • Correct and update the information about existing companies and facilities.
  • Obtain information about changes in number of employees and production volume and capacity,
  • Use the information from the Team’s questionnaire (in Microsoft Forms) to update the database.
  • Preferably ability to develop a web-based questionnaire for the data to go into exact location of the Excel Supply Chain Database file.
  • Monitor the LIB.SupplyChain@nrel.gov email box to reply to questions.
  • Contact (email and/or phone call) with representatives of companies and facilities to collected information.
  • Update and correct the email the distribution list for future releases.
  • Find the address and GPS coordinate of the companies and facilities.
  • Extract information on company profile (detailed and summary)
  • Enter all the new information in the existing Excel Database
  • Provide support to Communication representatives and the Web Development team to post the database on the LIB SC Database website.
  • Analyze various segments of the database for identifying of growth of each segment over time.
  • Support developing content such as graphs and tables for reports, presentations, and journal articles.
  • Provide additional supply chain analysis as needed in collaboration with The LIB Supply Chain Team.

This internship can be done 100% remotely from anywhere within US borders.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average

Undergraduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution. 


Post Undergraduate: Earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.


Graduate: Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution. 


Post Graduate: Earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for an internship period of up to one year.

Graduate + PhD: Completed master’s degree and enrolled as PhD student from an accredited institution.

Additional Required Qualifications

Additional skills include the knowledge of data analysis software (Excel or other advanced analysis tool).

Preferred Qualifications

  • An undergraduate (full time in the summer, part time during school) with demonstrated experience in database development and analysis.
  • Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated experience in Microsoft Excel software is preferred.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with a programming language (e.g., Java, Python, R, C++) is preferred.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with developing a web-based questionnaire.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: / Annual Salary Range: $34,000 - $54,400

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.

Benefits Summary

Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.

Badging Requirement

NREL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as required by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12), which includes a favorable background investigation. Intern assignments extending beyond six months will be subject to this requirement.
