Vice President, Grassroots Advocacy and Community Engagement

The Vice President, Grassroots Advocacy and Community Engagement, is a member of the Advocacy Leadership Team and provides direction and management of the ADA's efforts to recruit and engage Diabetes Advocates in communities around the country in support and alignment of the ADA’s advocacy and health equity goals.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes multifaceted strategies for advocate recruitment, cultivation, and engagement, including developing engaging grassroots campaigns and increasing grass tops involvement and effectiveness.
  • Leads the planning and execution of advocacy engagement and training events in conjunction with the federal and state government affairs teams.
  • Integrates advocacy initiatives throughout the ADA, working to ensure federal, state, and legal advocacy, communications, fundraising, and field operations are effectively and efficiently coordinated.
  • Oversees development of advocacy-related educational materials, in-person advocacy trainings, communication to advocates, and advocacy presence on web and in social media.
  • Leads efforts to create and implement engaging online action alerts, surveys, and social media campaigns.
  • Plans and implements community engagement activities in conjunction with ADA’s field division, state government affairs department, and health equity department.
  • Provides senior staff support for the ADA’s National Advocacy Committee.
  • Prepares and executes budgets for the department.
  • Manages the department staff and outside consultants.
  • Serves as a member of the Government Affairs & Advocacy management team providing input on ADA-wide planning and business integration efforts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Passion for advocacy and deep knowledge of diabetes and/or other chronic disease issues. Experience working with a non-profit organization and managing successful advocacy campaigns.
  • Bachelor’s degree, and 10+ years of experience in politics, public policy, online communications, grassroots activism, and/or a related field.
  • Experience managing a dedicated team of staff to meet strategic goals.
  • High-level expertise using online tools for issue advocacy, including ability to work within Convio CRM and CMS platforms.
  • Experience with creating and leading in-person trainings and webinars for volunteers and staff audiences.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to analyze and synthesize information.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of volunteers and staff.
  • Ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple projects.
