THE OPPORTUNITY

The Vice President (VP), Development & Strategic Initiatives serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting HACE. In partnership with the President & CEO, this position is responsible for all fundraising and development activities. The successful candidate will forge new relationships to build HACE’s visibility, impact, and financial resources. The VP will design and implement a comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances by cultivating individual, philanthropic and corporate support. This role reports directly to the President & CEO of HACE.

The VP will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow a $4.39 million budget through solicitation of major gifts, federal and state grants, special events and corporate and foundation support.

The successful candidate will expand and diversify HACE’s revenue, enhancing the donor base and pipeline, working closely with other team members to secure funding for new strategic initiatives. In addition, the VP will work closely with the board of directors and support board members as they take on a more active fundraising role.

The position will be a part of the senior management team that drives the overall strategy for the organization and represents HACE on a local, regional, and national basis. With an operating budget of $4.39 million and a FT staff of 20, the VP will initially develop deep knowledge of each project, program operations, and business plan, and will focus on the following areas: development/fundraising strategic plan and execution, external relationships, and staff leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising & Development Strategy

  • Support and partner with the President & CEO and board members on all major fundraising initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) to develop and implement HACE’s financial strategy, and annual budget planning.
  • Collaborate with HACE staff, Board of Directors, auxiliary board members and pertinent volunteers in planning fundraising events and information seminars.
  • Help to develop compelling marketing messages and campaigns to attract potential sponsors and participants to HACE related programs.
  • Oversee research funding sources and trends, with foresight, to help position HACE ahead of major funding changes or trends. Complete extensive and ongoing prospect research (online, databases, clearinghouses, professional literature, and donor prospecting directories) of current and prospective corporate and foundation partners to collect data and identify viable funding opportunities.
  • Forecast annual, quarterly, and monthly successful proposal grant submissions; reporting on funding partner renewal, acquisition, growth and increase in contributed revenues.
  • Complete all stages of funding proposal development including confirmation of project/program objectives, contact with the funding partner for clarification of guidelines, as well as development of letters of inquiry, online applications, and formal proposals with the appropriate organization approvals obtained.
  • Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program.


Donor Relations and Cultivation

  • Create, implement, manage, and assess a comprehensive donor relations plan to support organization’s fundraising efforts.
  • Monitor all donor information, provide, and present statistical analysis to board and staff leadership.
  • Fosters a positive, ongoing relationship with donors and ensures a long-term relationship is forged by maintaining contact and proactively educating donors on outcomes and results of HACE’s efforts.
  • Designs and implements growth and retention strategies with existing donors and opportunities to forge new donor relationships.
  • Oversees development of and manages donor and fundraising events.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to the auxiliary boards and councils that support fundraising goals.


Staff Leadership and Team Development

  • Identify, develop, coach, and retain high-performance team members, empowering them to elevate their level of responsibility, span of control, and performance.
  • Lead a team of 5-10 in the partnership team and others as designated.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to the auxiliary boards and councils that support fundraising goals.
  • Work with staff to develop systems to ensure consistent, high-quality project management.
  • Provide leadership in development of inter-team communication and cohesiveness, sustaining culture and supporting staff during organizational growth.
  • Work collaboratively with the senior management team to integrate cross program activities and functions.


External Relationships & Visibility:

  • Expand revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing programs and the growth of HACE; cultivate existing relationships and develop new funder relationships.
  • Manage relationships with partner organizations.
  • Community awareness and understanding of the data and research behind the needs of the constituents being served.


Qualifications

The Vice President, Development & Strategic Initiatives will be thoroughly committed to HACE’s strategy and mission. All candidates should have demonstrated leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience and strong demonstrated success managing funder relationships.

Specific requirements include:

  • Team Building and Development: The successful candidate will have recruited, managed, and developed a strong team of staff, development/account managers. This individual will serve as a “player/coach” to motivate and mentor his or her team.
  • Exceptional Communication and Influencing Skills: As a voice/advocate HACE, the VP will have strong written and verbal communication skills. She or he will be a persuasive, credible, and polished communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills. This individual must work collaboratively with internal as well as external partners and other organizations, providing exposure for program impact in a variety of professional journals and other media outlets. Ideally, this person will have served as an effective spokesperson at the national level.
  • Experienced Fundraiser: Strong demonstrated fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders including advisory groups, coalitions, forums, trade associations, foundations, corporate sponsors, and practitioner groups. Within 5-10 years demonstrated fundraising experience.
  • Advanced degree, with at least 10 years minimum of management experience in a nonprofit organization; demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources). Preference given to candidates who have received CFRE certification.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.
  • Integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed with demonstrated passion for HACE's mission and commitment to working collaboratively with a management team of senior professionals.
  • Solid judgment and strong organizational skills.
  • Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.
  • Ability to work both independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority internally & externally.
  • Customer focus. Impeccable integrity. Strong work ethic.
  • A team player, who can interrelate and operate effectively with peers and other associates within a collegial, yet demanding, work environment.
  • An individual who can handle a variety of constituencies, manage multiple tasks simultaneously and thrive in a complex environment with multiple priorities.


Salary Range $120,000-$140,000
