Why are We Hiring this Role?

Hello, my name is Joe Barton, founder and CEO at Barton Publishing, and I need your help. When I founded Barton Publishing 20 years, my motivation was to help people find natural ways to overcome health challenges. It was driven by my frustration from seeing how many people were being shortchanged by the traditional pharmaceutical-led medical system whose one and only answer to every problem was drugs, drugs and more drugs.

While we’ve achieved many of our goals so far, there’s more work left to do. And to help do that we need to take our finance and accounting function to the next level. This will ensure we have the proper financial planning, controls, systems, processes and policies in place to digest the scale to come. And that’s where you come in.

What’s the Ideal Candidate Background?

The ideal candidate should have experience overseeing substantial monthly expenditures (e.g., managing budgets exceeding $1 million per month in paid media) and demonstrate a proven ability to strategically scale operations while maintaining financial discipline. Understanding metrics like ROAS, CVR, CPA, AOV, churn, etc. is essential for strategic decision-making aimed at maximizing LTV outcomes.

Moreover, you should be intimately familiar with inventory accounting and all its nuances – choosing the right policy (LIFO, FIFO, average cost, direct cost, etc.) to reconciling sales and refund data to physical inventory counts and everything in between. At the same time, you should be a spreadsheet wizard who can build detailed cash flow forecasts that incorporate the stacking effects of multiple historical customer cohorts that generate cash flow over time.

Lastly, you’re someone who sees their career as a way to serve others. Someone who loves to be fruitful, loves to do work that helps people, loves to deliver hope and healing, loves to ease their suffering, and aligning them with the life that was intended for them.

How Will Your Time Be Spent?

Here’s an approximate breakdown of how you’ll spend your time while taking full ownership of your ad spend, ROAS, LTV targets and engagement targets:

  • 25% Growth Strategy – Lead the preparation of financial reports, budgets and forecasts, analyze variances, and assess financial performance in alignment with company goals.
  • 25% Financial Analysis – Collaborate with the BI team to develop and analyze reports, detect patterns, and provide actionable insights, leveraging financial data to enhance business modeling and forecasting accuracy.
  • 25% Operational Finance – Oversee daily financial operations, including accounting, running a tight monthly close process, payroll, billing, and financial reporting, ensuring compliance with GAAP and legal regulations, while mentoring and managing a team to achieve optimal performance.
  • 25% Communication – Work closely with the leadership team to communicate financial status, provide updates, and contribute to strategic decisions.

What Does Initial Success Look Like?

While objectives will change over time as the business evolves, there is a specific set of initial objectives and challenges to tackle as follows:

  • Establish Comprehensive Financial Forecasting Models – Develop and implement robust financial forecasting models that provide accurate predictions of revenue and expenses, enabling proactive decision-making and resource allocation.
  • Strengthen Accounting Controls – Conduct a thorough assessment of existing accounting processes and controls, identify weaknesses and gaps, and then implement enhancements to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and mitigate financial risks.
  • Enhance Financial Reporting – Implement improvements in financial and MIS reporting processes to provide timely and accurate information, leveraging standardized reporting templates and schedules that enhance transparency and accessibility for stakeholders, while ensuring all financial reports meet GAAP requirements and provide actionable insights for decision-making.
  • Streamline Month-end Close – Optimize the month-end close process to reduce the closing timeline, leveraging process automation, efficiency improvements and AI to streamline reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation, while enhancing visibility into financial performance to ensure timely reporting to support strategic planning and decision-making.

Requirements

  • Hands-on DTC Experience – With strong inventory and cost accounting skills in consumer products (supplements, beauty, etc.) or food/beverage, and preferably inside a business model driven by high scale paid media ($500,000 - $1,000,000 a month in ad spend)
  • 10+ Years Operational Accounting – Including transaction recording, inventory accounting, payroll processing, month-end-close and financial reporting, ensuring accurate financial records and GAAP compliance
  • 10+ Years Operational Finance – Including financial planning and analysis, budget development, cash flow management, and providing actionable insights through detailed financial reports to support strategic decision-making and operational efficiency
  • Data Driven – Extremely comfortable diving deep into analytics platforms, spreadsheets, etc., to detect patterns on which to capitalize while leveraging the latest in data science
  • Driven to Excellence – A natural end-to-end ownership mentality with a relentless inner drive to excellence that other people find energizing, inspiring and motivating
  • Systems-Oriented – A knack for creating order out of chaos with highly organized systems that leverage the best and most appropriate tech to deliver sustained success
