Position Summary

The Vocational ESL Instructor will be responsible for providing ESL instruction to English Learners enrolled in NSC’s Employment Readiness and Placement Program (ERP). This position will be responsible for creating meaningful lesson plans, monitoring student progress, maintaining ongoing student contact, enacting student retention activities, participating in staff development activities and completing related documentation and reports.

The Vocational ESL Instructor will report to the Senior Manager of Education Initiatives and is expected to participate in all department activities as necessary.

This is a permanent full-time position on a hybrid schedule. This position requires up to three or four days of teaching (20 hours) at the Center City Office and/ or Northeast NSC office (6434 Castor Avenue) as determined by programmatic needs.

The instructor is responsible for getting to both the Northeast and/or Center City offices as needed determined by class load.

Class hours generally fall within 8:30 to 4:30 or 9:00 to 5:00.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement ESL instruction for pre-literate, beginners and intermediate ESL learners
  • Teach in-person courses in coordination with program outcomes as far as employment.
  • Ensure students meet program requirements as far as class attendance and independent study.
  • Be aligned with the program goals of attaining gainful employment,
  • Utilize effective teaching and class management strategies to address students’ needs, including learner-centered instruction, differentiated instruction and individual support.
  • Maintain accurate student records on attendance and progress.
  • Assist in developing individualized learning lesson plans for each student and assess students’ English progress by reviewing and updating plans regularly.
  • Conduct pre and post testing with students
  • Enhance ESL curriculum for both classroom and independent study lessons drawing on local and national resources
  • Connect students with external referrals to local ESL providers upon closure
  • Communicate and coordinate with other departments at NSC as needed to ensure clients adhere to the program requirements

Required Skills And Experiences

  • This position requires 20 hours of teaching per week.
  • An ability to embrace rolling admission in the class.
  • An ability to teach large groups (perhaps up to 30 on a busy day).
  • An ability to create curriculum as needed for the needs of the students.
  • Help students work toward attaining and maintaining employment.
  • Working understanding of NSC’s mission, vision, values, programs and services, and business plan.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills as demonstrated by compassionate, courteous, cordial, cooperative, and professional interaction with diverse groups of co-workers, external business partners, and the community.
  • Adheres to all NSC and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Attends all NSC in-services as required.
  • Ability to operate a computer and use a variety of common software programs including Microsoft Office, Zoom, spreadsheets, customized databases and digital learning platforms
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and effectively communicating with individuals and groups.
  • Knowledge and/or experience working with pre-literate English language learners
  • Creativity, flexibility and spontaneity developing materials relevant to the ever changing needs of your students
  • Utilize volunteers to help support your teaching.
  • Patience, compassion, and a willingness to learn is a must.
  • 2-3 years of experience teaching English (abroad or in the US). In-Person teaching experience is mandatory. Knowledge of trauma-informed practices or experience working with refugees a plus.
  • Minimum Education: BA/BS degree from an accredited college or university in a related field (education, TESOL, linguistics, etc) preferred but not mandatory; TEFL/CELTA certification desired.

Work Environment

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Although work is primarily indoors, you will be required to travel outside to client and community locations.
  • Travel in and around NSC’s service delivery area to support clients access to services.
  • Certain visits or work-related appointments might be scheduled outside of traditional work hours as necessary.
  • This position will start on a hybrid model, with two days in the office and three days worked remotely.

  • COVID-Vaccine - NSC has determined that requiring that all staff who are working on-site be fully vaccinated is the best way to protect our employees and the community.
  • Working in the office is required for the Philadelphia office and other locations as well as offsite travel when necessary.   NSC is currently operating on a hybrid remote/office schedule.

LOCATION AND HOURS: This is a full-time, in-person position based in our Philadelphia office and/or Northeast NSC office with the potential for hybrid work as team needs allow. Our regular hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and this position requires working occasional evenings and weekends. We have COVID-19 safety protocols in place, and we revisit and update them in accordance with city, state, and federal guidelines.

COMPENSATION: The salary range is $45.000 commensurate with experience. The benefits package includes generous vacation and sick leave; paid sabbatical leave; summer hours; 77% employer-paid health, dental, and vision coverage; short-term disability, long-term disability, and life insurance, 403(b) with an employer match.
