Pay And Benefits

Hourly Pay Range: $21.333323 - $27.375933

Salary offers will be made within the posted pay range and will be based on a candidate's experience (paid or unpaid) that is directly relevant to the position.

A temporary status or seasonal status position receives EAP benefits only. Employees will accrue one (1) hour of sick leave for every thirty (30) hours worked with a maximum accrual of eighty (80) hours per year.

Job Details And Qualifications

We are seeking motivated individuals with a collaborative, team-oriented approach to work and strong interpersonal skills to join our team as Temporary Water Environment Services (WES) Assistants. If you are selected for this position, you will play a critical role, supporting WES's Field Operations Team with cleaning sewer and stormwater structures, inspecting assets, and performing vegetation maintenance at stormwater facilities. These positions are on a temporary basis and expected to end six months following the date of hire.

Required Minimum Qualifications/ Transferrable Skills:*

• Experience using and operating small hand tools and equipment, including hand tools, mowers, saws, and blowers
• Basic knowledge of custodial practices, grounds keeping techniques, mechanical maintenance, or sampling techniques
• Working knowledge of safety rules and practices for working in an industrial environment
• Ability to perform physical labor sometimes during adverse weather conditions
  
  

Preferred Special Qualifications/ Transferrable Skills:*

• CPR/First Aid certification
• Oregon Department of Transportation Traffic Flagging certification
• Possession of Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
• Experience operating hand tools and/or power tools, necessary to maintain and operate equipment
• Experience and/or training related to excavation safety or confined space entry
  
  

Pre-Employment Requirements

TYPICAL TASKS

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

• Sewer main line cleaning. Assists S&S Techs to setup traffic control in the roadway. Removes manhole covers to accommodate cleaning. Assists the Technician running the high pressure cleaning equipment. Performs cleaning and maintenance of tools and equipment.
• Sewer and storm main line CCTV inspections. Assists S&S Techs to setup traffic control in the roadway. Removes manhole covers to accommodate inspections. Inserts and removes camera equipment from manholes. Performs cleaning and maintenance of tools and equipment.
• Stormwater catch basin cleaning. Assists S&S Techs to setup traffic control in the roadway. Removes covers and grates to accommodate cleaning. Assists the Technician running the combo truck to setup and insert and remove vacuum snorkels into structures. Assists the Technician with structure inspections and recording measurements. Performs cleaning and maintenance of tools and equipment.
• Vegetated facility maintenance. Assists S&S Techs with inspections of vegetated facilities. Performs trimming and removal of vegetation. Operates mowers, saws, blowers and string trimmers to maintain facilities.
  
  

Required Knowledge And Skills

Working knowledge of: Methods, tools, and practices of the mechanical and maintenance trades and equipment; basic arithmetic; English grammar, spelling and punctuation; safety rules and practices for working in an industrial environment; basic custodial practices; basic groundskeeping techniques and basic mechanical maintenance.

Skill to: Work in high or confined spaces; read and understand technical equipment manuals; understand oral and written instructions; perform physical labor in all weather conditions; learn and use safe working practices; learn and follow instructions; learn and apply safe and effective use of hand and power tools; work effectively as a team or independently; apply learned techniques, processes and procedures; perform measurements and arithmetic computations; keep accurate records and provide simple oral reports; operate computer equipment and software; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Duties require physical labor, including walking, reaching, squatting, kneeling, bending, balancing, climbing, shoveling, fine motor control, and ability to lift up to 50 pounds, carry, and push/pull up to 70 pounds. Duties also involve exposure to bacteria, viruses and toxins in wastewater, chemicals, exhaust fumes and dust, loud noises, and vibration. Some duties involve exposure to adverse weather conditions and hazardous locations, such as streets, live sewers, confined underground areas and on elevated platforms.

Incumbents may perform after-hours emergency response on a callout basis.

WORK SCHEDULE

These Positions Are Included In The County’s Alternate Workweek Program, Working 40 Hours During a Standard Workweek Of Monday Through Thursday (Fridays Off)

• Regular hours of work will be 6:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Thursday. Specific hours of work will be discussed with candidates selected for these positions at the time an offer of employment is extended.
• These positions are designated as on-site/in-person. It is expected that the selected candidate will perform duties at the specified on-site work location.
• These positions are on a temporary basis and expected to end six months following the date of hire.

About The Department

Clackamas Water Environment Services produces clean water and protects water quality for more than 190,000 people living and working in Clackamas County. We operate and maintain five resource recovery facilities, 23 pumping stations and hundreds of miles of pipes.

Each year, we clean more than seven billion gallons of water which we recover and turn into natural energy and fertilizer. We also help reduce pollution in local rivers, streams, and wetlands caused by surface and stormwater runoff, the number one source of water pollution in Oregon.
