- If you're looking to understand the why behind inequities, it helps to understand some key concepts that workplace experts and practitioners use to describe organizations. In particular, knowing the difference between structure, culture, and strategy can help you more easily break down a set of outcomes into its constituent parts. Let's start with structure. An organization's structure describes all of the formal rules, roles, and responsibilities that allow it to coordinate people's behavior and achieve its goals. For example, the headcount allotted to a given department, the process required to secure funding for an expenditure, or the job responsibilities of a middle manager might all fall under structure. To get yourself thinking effectively about the role of structure on a given outcome, I recommend asking yourself, "How did the design of the environment influence or contribute to this outcome?"
