From the course: Build Your Financial Literacy

The basics of financial literacy

- Have you ever felt overwhelmed or confused by financial decisions that you needed to make or financial documents that you've needed to read? You knew that they were incredibly important to get right, but there were just so many strange terms or things you thought you recognized, only to have them reveal themselves later as something entirely different. If that experience feels all too familiar, you're not alone. Less than 20% of working American adults feel confident about their savings, and American competency with financial concepts is only getting worse over time. Thankfully, that doesn't have to be the case. It's my hope that in this course, you'll learn thorough working definitions of the most essential financial terms used in everyday life and in business. I'm Cassandra Reed, and I've been working in the financial services industry for over a decade. I am passionate about empowering you, my community, through education. I love helping you make better financial choices that will not only benefit you today, but help you achieve your long-term goals in the future. In this course, I will walk you through the definitions and examples of the most important financial terms that you and well, every adult, needs to know. I'll cover the terms in these six essential categories, banking and credit terms, terms for investing, stock market terms, terms in retirement savings, tax terms and terms for those of you who are running your own small business. After this course, you should feel confident tackling articles or information about any of these subjects. Understanding your finances can feel daunting at first, I know. But I want to assure you that once you made it through to the other side of this course, you'll be better equipped to make the right calls in life. As you well know, money matters. The world that we live in today, it requires it. So gaining a grasp on your finances will not only help you live a comfortable life now, but get you closer to achieving your goals in the future. On that note, let's get started.
