- Every operating system has its own strengths and weaknesses, and they're typically different among operating systems. It's very important as a pen tester that you learn as much as you can about the most common operating systems, but hopefully about every operating system that you are likely to encounter. Now, clearly when we're talking about computers, you're probably going to run into both Windows and Linux, mostly on the server side as well as on workstation side. And of course there's Mac OS, which is derivative of Linux. So if you really know a lot about Windows and Linux, then you'll know a lot about the operating systems that you'll encounter. You'll know their strengths and their weaknesses. Just like Linux, Windows also has the issues of privilege escalation, or at least the opportunities for privilege escalation.
