- [Instructor] The most common use of certificates is to protect web servers, but they can also provide authentication for other servers, individuals, and email addresses. The certificate subject is the entity that owns the public key contained within a certificate. By issuing a digital certificate, the certificate authority is certifying that it's verified the identity of the certificate subject, and it's vouching for the fact that the public key does indeed belong to that entity. We've already looked at digital certificates belonging to websites, and this is indeed the most common use of digital certificates that we'll see. Let's take another look at the certificate belonging to LinkedIn. Here in the certificate I can see that in the Details section there's an entire section dedicated to the certificate subject.
