- [Narrator] There was a time just a few years ago when data science and big data were practically synonymous terms, as were semi-magical words like Hadoop, that brought up all the amazing things happening in data science. But things are a little different now, so it's important to distinguish between the two fields. I'll start by reminding you what we're talking about when we talk about big data. Big data is data that is characterized by any or all of three characteristics: unusual volume, unusual velocity, and unusual variety, again, singly or together, can constitute big data. Let me talk about each of these in turn. First, volume. The amount of data that's become available, even over the last five years, is really extraordinary.
