From the course: Digital Sustainability: How to Reduce Your Digital Footprint

What is the carbon footprint?

- Greenhouse gases are released through the burning of fossil fuels to generate electricity, heat buildings and transport people, products and services. They are emitted through agricultural practices, the use of fertilizers, the composition of waste and aerosol use, as well as through the use of technology. Basically, any action we take on a daily basis will produce some type of emission. Notice that I call these emissions greenhouse gases. When you add all of them up, that's our carbon footprint. The carbon footprint is the measure of the amount of greenhouse gas emissions generated and its measure in kilograms of carbon dioxide. It is essential to reduce the carbon footprint to prevent global warming, which will have a huge effect on climate, agriculture, water, and all ecosystems. But how we can do this? Governments are taking action by implementing policies to reduce emissions, increasing fuel taxes, promoting renewable energy resources and improving energy efficiency. Companies are also taking steps to reduce their emissions by implementing policies and best practices for using clean energy, energy-efficient technologies, and recycling resources as well as raising awareness and educating their teams. We can also reduce our individual carbon footprint by becoming aware of our impact, reducing our fuel consumption and utilizing renewable energy and also adopting a sustainable lifestyle that includes among other things, the responsible use of new technologies and digital services. For example, we created this course to last for only half an hour instead of one hour to help reduce carbon emissions. What can you start doing to reduce yours? It's the little things that we do daily that make a difference.
