Case study: Amazon sustainability data initiative

- [Instructor] Let's take a look at the Amazon Sustainability Data Initiative, or ASDI. This program seeks to accelerate sustainability research and innovation by minimizing the cost and time required to acquire and analyze large sustainability data sets. The ASDI also aims to advance sustainability research by providing a platform for scientific collaboration and sharing knowledge between communities of scientists, technologists, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders across sectors. The initiative will empower communities around the world to have access to data that can be used to solve problems related to climate change, deforestation, and biodiversity. Organizations can use ASDI data to improve their environmental impact, operational efficiency, and financial performance. For example, Apple used ASDI data to identify areas of deforestation in its supply chain so that it could go ahead and invest in reforestation projects. Furthermore, business leaders around the world utilize ASDI to enhance their current sustainability operations and create new ones. An example of this, is the government of California, where they used satellite imagery and mapping technology to identify the most vulnerable areas of California's coastline in order to prevent erosion caused by sea level rise. ASDI leverages collective knowledge to make it easy for business leaders and companies to take reins on understanding their climate impact.
