- [Instructor] In 2017, Google launched the Data Commons Initiative to make all this data easily accessible for business leaders, consumers, and researchers. Despite the critical urgency to combat the effects of climate change, finding data around sustainability is where mapping data was 15 years ago. It spread across thousands of silos. It exists in multitude of databases. And it's recorded using different schemas. Today, Data Commons is one of the largest data repositories on sustainability. Data Commons cover many topics. From demographics, economics, emissions, and the climate. Spanning over thousands of different sources. With some topic examples from climate predictions from NASA and emissions from the Environmental Protection. To show you what I mean, I'll go ahead and click into Map Explorer. On the left-hand side, you'll be able to see all of the statistical variables that you'll be able to research about. For example purposes, I'll go ahead and click on Greenhouse Gas Emissions across states in the USA. Now you have a full view of all of the 50 states and their greenhouse gas emissions. As Data Commons synthesizes a single graph from multiple different data sources into one place, the benefit of this across multiple data sets is that now it becomes much easier to build connections across this information. Some are alarming, some are sad, but always illuminating. Data Commons are not limited to one specific country or region. Now if I click back into my browser, and select Project Temperature Rise in India, we can now see the temperature peaks all over India. As a business leader, the value of data is that it enables organizations to make informed decisions that can lead to enhanced business performance, streamlined operations, and drive sustainability.
