What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?

- [Instructor] The Internet of Things, or IoT, is a system of interrelated computing, mechanical, and digital machines. Each device is provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human to human or human to computer interaction. Like other network systems, IoT has a framework that defines a hierarchy of both software and hardware layers. Each component that sits between the data being produced at the edge to the data being received by your systems and the cloud infrastructure is called an IoT framework. In a simple sense, IoT systems connect the physical world to the digital world using what is referred to as things. A thing can be almost anything, a GPS tracker in shared scooters, a farm animal with a biochip transponder, an automobile that has built-in sensors to alert drivers when tire pressure is low, or any other natural or synthetic object that can be assigned an IP address and is able to transfer data over a network. Today, organizations in a variety of industries are using IoT to operate smarter and more efficiently. IoT is essential to many operations, as it provides businesses with a realtime look into how their systems really work, delivering insights into everything from performance of machines to supply chain and logistic operations. IoT is also playing an increasingly important role in driving sustainable innovation, whether organizations use the technology to minimize food waste, conserve water, or increase energy efficiency. At the end of the day, less waste also has a material benefit, as sustainability lowers the bottom line costs of your business. Driving change through these solutions is vital and can be done in all business operations. The IoT industry is a rapidly growing technology stack that is changing the way we live. As technical leaders, it's our responsibility to understand how IoT can bring value to our businesses by reducing the emissions and risk created by our business activities.
