What is negotiation? Most people view the word negotiation as two people arguing and bargaining with each other. Negotiation is not an argument. It's not a legal debate. It's a path. When a hiker goes on a trail, they need to negotiate the pathway, deal with obstacles and reach their destination. Think of negotiation in the same way. To traverse a path, we must move through challenges. The path includes various stages of interaction and ultimately coming to a positive resolution. Remember, you're not in a negotiation. You are negotiating a challenging road. You're going to go over some hurdles and address obstacles as you negotiate this path. Often, we don't like obstacles and challenges because we view problems as negative experiences. But a problem is not necessarily a negative thing. It's just something we have to solve.
