- [Instructor] Routers separate networks from different subnets. We used to buy a router every time we needed to send data from one subnet to another, but that gets very expensive. Now we can replace that router with a layer three switch. So we see in the graphic, computers on both sides, and we see subnet one and subnet two, and we also see the router in the middle. And traditionally, this has worked perfectly fine to be able to route between two different subnets. Let's take a look at what we can do now. Here, we have a similar setup except for we've replaced the switches with a layer three switch and we've taken out the router. We can do this because of virtual local area networks, or VLANs, and basically, what that means is we can take our switch and we can say that there's two different subnets going on. A subnet on port one and a subnet on port two. We can also add additional subnets on port three all the way through…
