- [Narrator] Antivirus and anti-malware protection are part of a layered security approach, as there are many avenues for viruses to attack your system. A common way to get a computer virus is by opening an email attachment that has an infected file. You could also be a victim of a malware attack by clicking on a malicious ad or simply surfing by what is called a drive-by download. Or you could go to a site to download software, which may contain malware. Or you became a victim because you had unpatched software or didn't update your operating system, and that made it possible for you to get a virus. Antivirus runs in the background and monitors your system as you download software, open documents, or extract files. Signature based matches a signature of a known virus. Now, virus definitions contain signatures for virus in other malware that have been defined. Updated definitions are downloaded daily or in some cases more often.
