- [Instructor] A PDU is a generic term for the state of a data packet at any of the four layers of the TCP/IP model. There are four distinct states. In the application layer, the PDU is referred to as data. In the transport layer, it's referred to as a segment. In the internet layer, it's called a packet. And in the network access layer, a frame. Information is added to the data as it moves through the layers in the form of headers. Looking at this graphic from the top down, you can see what happens after a user creates data in an application and sends it. A header is added in the transport layer, the internet layer, and the network access layer. The header information is cumulative. Because the application layer communications are so complex, we can't say that a header, in the sense that we're talking about here, is added.
