- [Instructor] PDU stands for Protocol Data Unit. It's a single block of information used in data transmissions. The term PDU describes the form that any packet is in as it moves through the TCP/IP models layers. Let's look at the four layers of the TCP/IP model again before we continue. The application layer communicates with applications and allows access to network resources. The transport layer provides reliable delivery of the data. The internet layer moves the packets from the source to the destination, often over the internet, and the network access layer moves the data between two devices on the same network. Additionally, as the PDU moves through these layers, each adds protocol specific and layer specific user data.
