Using a separate network for your IoT devices

- [Instructor] Internet of Things devices, or IoT devices, like smart power plugs, smart lights, smart TVs, security cameras and voice assistants, can make a lot of daily tasks at home quicker and easier. The majority of these devices are quote unquote smart, because they connect to an internet service to deliver weather information, search results, TV shows, or remote access to cameras and lights. So, to operate, they only need internet access, not access to your other network devices, like your computer and your printer. For many of these devices, we can use the guest network that most Wi-Fi routers provide, instead of adding them to our real Wi-Fi network. Guest mode creates a separate wireless network that still uses your internet connection and it lets clients communicate with the internet, but not with each other. And some routers let you assign an ethernet port on the router to that guest network, as well, so wired clients can access the internet, but not talk amongst…
