- Copyright infringement. Alright, so let's say you've created something. You own copyrights. Once you own copyrights, what does that mean? What do you get? You get the right to claim ownership and to exploit your copyrights by using and licensing the work. But what about stopping infringers? You can do that too. But before you can sue anyone in the U.S., you need a copyright registration from the U.S. Copyright Office. For a small fee, if you file properly, you get a certificate, a fancy piece of paper or a PDF document. Will the Copyright Office or government protect you and go after infringers for you? It's a surprise to some people to find out that the government doesn't give you much help. Your copyright means you have the right to sue somebody privately for infringement. A lot of people don't register their copyrights. You still own the copyright.
