Gukesh Dommaraju: The boy king of chess With the 18-year-old winning the World Chess Championship, India becomes the only nation besides the Soviet Union to produce multiple world champions. His serene countenance that barely showed any emotion in either defeat or victory finally lost its stoicism as he broke down in tears at the end of a do-or-die final of the FIDE World Championship in Singapore. And one realised the enormity of his accomplishment: he is just a kid playing a game of philosophers and kings. The calmness he exuded through his meteoric rise in the ruthlessly competitive world of professional chess often made one forget how young he was as he beat some of the world’s greatest players. After winning the highest possible honour in the game, 18-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju hugged his father and wept, his impassivity crumbling under the weight of his historical achievement. On December 12, Gukesh, the teenage grandmaster from Chennai, was crowned the 18th undisputed world chess champion. He had created history by becoming the youngest ever to win the title since the first official World Championship match in 1886. In a see-saw battle that could have gone either way, Gukesh ground down the reigning world champion, Ding Liren from China in 58 moves, in a game that most thought was heading for a draw. After the 13th game, the score was tied at 6.5 each. According to the rules, the first to reach a score of 7.5 in the 14 classical games would become the champion. In the event of a tied-score after 14 games, the game would go tie-breakers with faster time controls. While Gukesh at number 5 was ranked higher than Liren in the classical format, the Chinese world champion was considered one of the greatest players in the rapid and blitz formats, and is currently ranked number 2 in the faster versions of the game. #chess #worldrecord #post #game #india #linkeein #moment
