This article really got me thinking. It's all about pork becoming less popular because it's supposedly getting pricier, among other things. But honestly, I haven't seen its cost spike that much — not any more than any other meat, at least. Maybe it's because I've always leaned toward eating less meat, growing up in a house that favored veggie burgers and fish over steaks and pork chops. I won't lie, pork is one of my favorite meats, but these days, I eat very little, mostly for ethical and environmental reasons.
That being said, why not just produce fewer livestock and treat the animals we do raise a bit nicer? I've spent enough time around slaughterhouses (from the tech side, but still) to get a real feel for what goes on there, and it hit me hard. Giving animals a bit more room to roam and a decent life seems like the least we can do. There have been times when hunting was how I got by, and I can tell you, not a bit of that meat was taken for granted. Eating meat and raising animals myself, I know all too well the sacrifice these creatures make for us. That's why I don't waste a thing. And yep, I've got turkeys on the farm who are more pets than food, though their eggs are fair game.
I've also recently committed to only buying eggs and meat from local farmers who treat their animals right — and I trust but verify. The thought of buying eggs from the store makes me cringe now (unless they are free-range), knowing my own chickens are living their best life outside the factory farm system. And while we're on the topic, eating a bit less meat isn't just good for the animals — it's not bad for the planet, either. I know changing up how we do things is tough on farmers, but maybe there's a silver lining in growing more organic crops and focusing on quality meats versus quantity meats to balance things out.
I would never tell anyone what or how to eat, but I think we can skip a few pieces of meat, pay a little more, and make some of their little lives better. I also know what it is to raise a family, and times are tough. There are no simple answers here, but maybe it's a good opportunity to pause and take a breath. And please remember, support your local farmers. They appreciate it.
