I wanted to challenge myself to deploy a website without using services like Netlify, Heroku, Railway, or Vercel. Setting up the EC2 instance, DNS, SSL, certificates, containers, and reverse proxy were all very new territory for me but they were awesome learning experiences. Doing this has only made me want to dive deeper into the world of DevSecOps. As such, I'm setting a new goal: earning the CKAD certification. Server vs. Serverless: Choosing the Right Architecture Each has strengths server-based for stability and serverless for flexibility. Often, the best solution is a hybrid approach: servers for core stability, and serverless functions for specific tasks that need on-demand scaling. Server-Based is ideal for applications with consistent, high demand that require total control over resources and environment. It provides stability and customizability but comes with higher costs and maintenance overhead since you manage scaling and uptime yourself. Serverless architecture is used for event-driven, irregular workloads. It scales automatically, is cost-efficient as you pay only for usage, and allows rapid deployment but watch out for cold starts and vendor lock-in limitations. Since Vercel only supports Serverless architecture. I have built complete architecture on Serverless for game data fetch and update! So choose wisely and efficiently! Great video with Chris Butler on how Github is developing their AI-implementations in a more agentic and collaborative environment. Especially interesting are his thoughts on harm evaluation and harm reduction, and he touches on the human cost of dealing with the toxic parts of humanity (think of all the ghost workers tagging content for AI:s to learn from) – which is all to often missing from these kinds of presentations, kudos! https://lnkd.in/dHVnnzFU

A year or so ago I was all in on Terraform for Infrastructure as Code. It clear to me that in the cloud we have more than one type of "infrastructure". There is "baseline infrastructure" such as networking, centralised log management etc. Then there is "app infrastructure" such as a S3 bucket or EventBridge event bus used by an application. These are different problems to solve. Exactly where that delineation is varies. Some organisations have a large central IT team who can (and want to) manage all of the baseline resources. Smaller teams may struggle with configuring buckets securely. It's all about finding a balance and ensuring everyone understands their roles and responsibilities. Lately I've been playing more with CDK. I'm coming around to the idea that it is better suited to app infrastructure. Software engineers shouldn't need to learn another language to manage infrastructure. CDK allows teams to take secure by default components and deploy them along with their app. I enjoyed hearing Adam K., Elad Ben-Israel and Eric Johnson discuss this and more on GOTO Conferences unscripted "podcast". Check it out at https://lnkd.in/guNGiEZe For the record, Wing looks really interesting, but I'm moving away from Terraform so software engineers don't need to learn another language. Wing has the same problem - it's another language to impose on teams.
