To conclude our four-part series "Equity in Action: Shaping Racial Justice at The BUILD Health Challenge," we're sharing our commitment to advancing racial justice. The practices detailed within emerged from intentional partnership with BUILD awardees and the recommendations surfaced during that process. In this article, we detail the work we have done since the start of this journey and our commitments going forward. Collaboration is key!

This week, I had the privilege of representing WeWorld and the broader ChildFund Alliance family at the official launch of the ChildFund Alliance World Index on the Rights of Women and Children. Among other things, this report amplifies the voices of over 10,000 children from 41 countries, capturing their fears, needs, and aspirations around their right to the future. Claiming the right to the future is an act of courage and defiance. It requires adults to recognize that the voices and needs of young people must be placed at the center of decision-making. This is not about "protection" or "care" in a paternalistic sense. It is about justice, equity, and intergenerational dignity. It calls for a shift from adults maintaining power over children to adults recognizing children as active agents, with their own rights, wisdom, and capacity to shape the world they will inherit. It was a meaningful experience to discuss these findings with a group of dedicated and insightful speakers. I’m especially grateful to Casey Harden for her graceful moderation and thought-provoking questions, to Manuel Fontaine our keynote speaker for opening the event with passion, and to Lisa Ann Kurbiel, Gillian Huebner, Daniel Seymour, and Sarah Jonson of the International Youth Foundation for leading an enriching conversation that reminded us of the impact we can achieve by working together. DadsMOVE is a small organization with BIG goals. DadsMOVE (the MOVE stands for Mentoring Others Through Voices of Experience) started in the summer of 2011. Six fathers who had met at various events who all had children with behavioral health concerns decided that there needs to be more support for fathers who have children like theirs. At the time there were several family-run organizations that provided education and support, all were female-led and generally focused on moms. While this is great and needed, we decided there needed to be a male-led, father-focused organization dedicated to empowering fathers to be better dads, and more involved in advocating in the systems that serve our families. They all pooled our money together to file our incorporation and IRS 501c3. Dads MOVE was incorporated in the State of Washington in the fall of 2011. We then offered two fathers retreats a year. As more resources became available, we added training in a variety of topics across the state. After years of growth, we formed several partnerships across Washington, the United States and beyond. Over the years we have presented at several state and national conferences. In 2018, Dads MOVE was awarded the SAMHSA Statewide Family Network Grant that has allowed us to further reach more families. In 2025, we are growing our social media and community outreach as the journey continues…

Get Involved in Local Politics: Attend community forums, join local political groups, or volunteer for organizations that advocate for social justice, educational equity, and human rights. 4. Educate Yourself and Others: Dive deeper into the history and current implications of laws like the Comstock Act and movements such as the pro-life campaign. Share your findings through social media, blogs, or during community events to spread awareness. 5. Support Inclusive Education Programs: Advocate for and support educational programs that promote accurate historical education, address systemic racism, and include diverse perspectives on gender and race. ❓❓HOW can we solve the complex mess we are in? I WHOLEHEARTEDLY believe that community is at the heart of our solution to everything. Humans evolved in communities like fish evolved in water, so we need community to breathe. What’s more, society needs communities to operate - without connection, trust and solidarity, we can’t achieve equality, cohesion or democracy.  ❓❓So HOW can we restore community in societies - like ours - where it has been lost? (and, let’s be honest, intentionally broken down by the powers that be) I WHOLEHEARTEDLY believe the long-term solution lies in [EQUITABLY] supporting mothers and parents to build the communities of support they need to thrive as parents (which is obviously good for their kids too). It takes a village to raise a child, right? By gathering the "village" they need to thrive and raise their child, parents can rebuild community for the next generation. ❓❓But HOW do we do that? The simple solution could be to go back to living in the hunter-gatherer communities in which we spent most of our history as a species living (hehe). But we can’t do that can we? Instead, we need to understand what a ‘good’ village looks like so we can support mothers/parents to build the communities of support they need. There are many different ways a ‘good village’ can look, we need to know the ‘active ingredients’ of a ‘good’ community of support, so that we can find ways to bring those ingredients together in 21st Century Britain.  😇 I am starting a [part-time] PhD at University of Cambridge to find out what these ‘active ingredients’ are - by comparing the social networks of mothers in the UK and contemporary hunter-gatherer mothers.  🛠 The end-product will be a toolkit for grassroots organisations that are building community for [and through] parents, to so they can enhance and validate their existing brilliant work.  🔥 I’ll be looking to get four larger organisations to sponsor the toolkit (4k per year each) - to help fund the research.
