How are beauty, truth and goodness fundamentally linked to the universal values of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Daniel Asia, president of The Center for American Culture and Ideas, sat down with us to share how they promote American intellectual engagement. He explains, “We also believe that all politics is downstream of culture. If you do not understand the arts, you will not understand the relationship between culture and politics. People who are elevated by the arts will come to politics with a different sensibility than those who are not. Most importantly, it gives more and greater meaning to their lives.” https://bit.ly/3OBHpJY

NEW EPISODE! In our fascination with #STEM education, are we losing something vital by squeezing out the arts. It is precisely in its rich and diverse #aliveness perhaps that music, and other arts, hold so much possibility. Check out this week's conversation with the incredible Eric Dozier! With a couple of stunning songs performed by Eric too! Eric and Tim talk about: 🎵 How does music connect us with ourselves? 🎶 How does music connect us with each other, and build community? 🎵 How does music offer other ways of knowing and transferring cultural knowledge? 🎶 How do black and indigenous cultural ways of knowing get marginalised by white supremacy culture? 🎵 What does it mean for a teacher (like a choirleader) to hold space for transformation? Erasing Africa and her people's contributions is a significant component of anti-Blackness. In reality, people across the African Diaspora have always enriched humanity, culture, and societies. Take country music, for instance; for far too long, the persistent #whitewashing by record executives and industrial leaders in the music industry has erased the Diaspora from the country music narrative. But a few simple Google searches (James A. Bland, Elizabeth Cotten, Deford Bailey, Linda Martell) can help create a necessary shift in the dialogue. Furthermore, had it not been for the influence of the Western African Lute, the banjo, a staple in what would later become “hillbilly” music, would never exist! For those of us charged to lead #systemschange, create #inclusive workspaces, and engage in culturally competent #leadershipdevelopment, we have to be able to see the connections between centuries of African/Black erasure and patterns of racial inequities. The reality is that we cannot course correct our now without acknowledging how we arrived at this moment. This information isn't just vital because we’re in the middle of #blackhistorymonth. For folks ready to invest energy and labor into unlearning #BlackErasure, I have created my Auditing and Addressing Anti-Blackness workshop for organizations committed to culture change. And because it's Black History Month and I want folks to do better individually, I have also created a modified version of this workshop starting next month (right after #blackhistorymonth). It is designed to help folks embody new ways to eliminate anti-Blackness and other types of racialized violence from their lives. https://lnkd.in/gA_h5UgX

‼️Please take a moment to read the Black Orchestral Network’s call to action “Dear American Orchestras Part II” focused on tenure reform including 10 steps towards equity in the tenure process. I firmly believe that Gen X can end these long established practices that have been harmful with the goal to create a better working environment for the generations that follow. I refuse to believe in common statements like “this process is horrible but it is the best process we have”. We should and MUST reevaluate practices that have been in place for over 30 years. We as musicians need to care for ourselves and our colleagues and establish an updated process that is beneficial to musicians. We as administrators need to make this a priority for our orgs, which includes aligning the Board and/or Music Director with these shared values. Please take a moment to read the open letter. If you have questions, feel free to to share them on the Black Orchestral Network page and/or join the Community Conversation that will be held tomorrow (Monday) at 7:30pm ET virtually. #dayofsolidarity #dearamericanorchestras #advocacy #protest #solidarity #equity https://lnkd.in/eXg5cEXw

Key to the ongoing conversations about Latino representation in the U.S. entertainment industry is the need for the diversification of stories, which in turn would breed valuable specificity. Rather than expecting one production to speak strongly to every single subset of the vast Latino community, projects should reflect the unique microcosms and experiences that speak to groups such as Cuban Americans in Florida, Mexican Americans in Los Angeles, or Dominican Americans in New York City.
