Cities throughout Minnesota are celebrating Juneteenth, also known as "Freedom Day," which marks the end of slavery in Galveston, Texas, two years after the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation. Although the official national holiday is on June 19, events are already taking place in observance. Juneteenth was recognized as an official state holiday in Minnesota in 2023 and received federal recognition in 2021. https://lnkd.in/g-uwkpN8 #Juneteenth #FreedomDay #Emancipation #HistoricalCelebration #MinnesotaEvents

We appreciate the shout out, Latarsha B.! And we are so happy to support and celebrate this very American holiday; at the same time recognizing that our democracy is still very much a work in progress. But, if we use the past to learn and self-reflect in the present, we can be better human beings in the present and future. #Juneteenth Princeton Hydro

Celebrate Their Legacy: Tips for Personalizing a Memorial Service ✅ Choose a Meaningful Location When planning a tribute, think about a place that was special to your loved one. This could be a favorite park, a community center, or even their own backyard. A familiar and cherished setting can add a personal touch to the memorial and make it more comforting for those who attend.' ✅ Create a Memory Corner Set up a table or space where guests can view photos, mementos, and keepsakes that celebrate the life of the deceased. Encourage friends and family to contribute items that remind them of good times shared, creating a collective patchwork of memories. ✅ Encourage Story Sharing During the service, allow time for guests to share their stories and memories. This can be done formally, as part of the ceremony, or informally in smaller groups. Hearing different perspectives on the person's life can be therapeutic and helps to paint a fuller picture of their impact on others. #EndOfLifePlanning #TumbleweedTips #Tumbleweed #TumbleweedPlan #memorialservice

Celebrating Juneteenth Juneteenth marks a pivotal moment in American history, commemorating June 19, 1865, the day when Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and the enslaved were now free. This announcement came a full two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation had officially outlawed slavery in Confederate territories. The delay in the enforcement of the Proclamation highlights the deep-seated resistance to ending slavery and the complexities involved in applying federal laws across a fractured nation. The first celebration of Juneteenth was one of both profound joy and cautious optimism. The newly freed African Americans of Galveston rejoiced in the streets, their celebrations a powerful act of communal catharsis. However, this newfound freedom was tempered by the uncertainty of how true emancipation would unfold in the years to come. Despite the challenges they faced, including segregation, economic disparity, and the long struggle for civil rights, Juneteenth has remained a symbol of resilience and hope. It is a day to reflect on the bitter history of slavery, to celebrate the strides toward equality, and to renew the commitment to fighting against systemic injustices. This holiday serves not only as a reminder of past pain but also as an inspiration to strive for a brighter, more inclusive future. Celebrating Juneteenth can be a deeply meaningful experience, involving both reflection on history and enjoyment of community and culture. We celebrate this day to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. Here are a few ways to honor the spirit of Juneteenth. ➡ Read books and articles on the history of Juneteenth and African American culture and contributions. ➡ Engage in community events featuring African American art, food, and performances. ➡ Support black-owned businesses by dining at a local restaurant or purchasing from black artisans and entrepreneurs. ➡ Connect with others by sharing traditional foods and engaging in conversations about the significance of Juneteenth. ➡ Engage in service by volunteering for organizations that work towards social justice, education, or community support. #Juneteenth2024 #FreedomDay #EmancipationDay #BlackHistory #CelebrateFreedom #EndSlavery #AfricanAmericanHistory #SupportBlackOwned #JuneteenthCelebration
