"A #Musician's #Mindset"
I recently had the opportunity to spend time with our second cohort of the "Rhythms of the Earth" Tribal Music Collective (#ROTE). A set of 74 musicians across India - this time in workshop mode to plan for the next album. I have the privilege of witnessing their journey (& actually learning much more) in my role as chief mentor.
Inko main naya kya bataaoon? Thought of #sharing what I have learnt so far about developing what can be called "A Musician's Mindset" in life.
A. At its core, music must instill a spirit of #gratitude, reminding us of the gift of sound and expression we've been given. If we allow gratitude to fuel our creativity, it can #inspire us to explore new tunes, rhythms, harmonies, tell stories/melodies that uplift us and raise the bar.
B. A key element is #mindfulness, cultivated through "riyaz" or practice. Whether in practicing scales, or improvising, this focused attention on the present moment enhances our awareness and ability to connect deeply, while also transcending the 'lists' in our minds - to enter a #flow state.
C. Just as #mastering a raga requires #time with self + observing our gurus/mentors, so does any creative effort/lifeskill. Plus dealing with the bad days (they WILL come). Patience and refinement of our craft are essential for growth and pushing the boundaries.
D. Music demonstrates the value of #togetherness. Whether we're playing in a band, singing in a choir, or jamming with friends, it fosters a sense of #community. It teaches us the importance of listening, harmonizing, blending together to create something beautiful. Also, the listener's experience here is key. Your presence is a function of the audience.
E. My personal highs as a drummer have been about sharing #space & followership; where your real value lies in getting the instruments & vocals to shine. Where you alone are "noise", but by virtue of being together - become "music". This is the hardest part: #dissolving of the ego. It lies at the crux of building winning teams. Hours can be spent talking about this.
F. I also believe that a true musician's mindset must transcend rigidity. We can stay true to our past, and yet keep reinventing ourselves, experiencing #openness to new ideas.#Exploring different genres/ techniques is essential to dreaming big and enriching our musical vocabulary.
In conclusion, this mindset is not just about music; it's about #embracing a way of thinking & being that nurtures creativity, mindfulness, patience, togetherness, space and openness. Whether you're a seasoned musician or someone who simply enjoys listening, there is so much to this that applies to #life & #leadership. Do add your thoughts in the comments.
p.s: Added #perks of music : Meeting really cool characters - in this case the incredibly talented "#Dashugs" - Ladakh's first band! ROTE Collaborators for this season. Follow them on Insta. A snippet of this session where I share some hacks :)
