Junior developer interviews are the easiest to pass in tech. First, you need to focus on the right things. Use these 7 interview prep tips to get your first developer job/internship: 1. Brush up on core programming concepts and algorithms. 2. Document 2/3 of the interesting personal projects you built. Don’t show the Twitter clone you built. Show something special. 3. Be ready to discuss any projects or experiences on your resume. If you don’t have any experience, contribute to Open Source to get shareable experiences. Never ever lie on your resume 4. Understand the basics of Git and version control workflows. This is a non-negotiable 5. Prepare answers for common behavioral questions. E.g.. “Tell me about yourself”. Sell yourself and make them like you 6. Have thoughtful questions about the company and role. Do extensive due diligence. Research and push them 7. This means I focus on interns and university grads. ❓ Can I check on the status of my application with you? Unfortunately, no. In order to maintain a fair and equitable recruiting process for all applicants, I'm unable to give individual updates on your application. ❓ What role should I apply to/can you recommend a role that I apply to? That's up to you! What are you looking for in your next opportunity? Only you know your goals and priorities, so apply to the role that most closely aligns with it, while making sure you apply to the right role. ❓ What do you mean by right role? If you have school to return to (so you are graduating in December 2024 and beyond), you want an intern role. If you are graduating soon (December 2023 - June 2024), you want an University Grad opportunity. ❓ How can I best stand out in my application/resume? Resume - make sure you are highlighting the technical work you've done inside and outside of the classroom. Your resume should be 1 page, so make sure you are using the space thoughtfully (if you find you are having to remove projects but still have your hospitality or retail work listed - remove those, and put the projects back on). On your application - tell the truth, it all comes out in the end. Be honest with all questions asked on the application (grad date, location, immigration support needs, etc.). I want to be respectful of YOUR time - so if you find yourself not being truthful on your application in the hopes of being reviewed, I feel awful that I put you through steps that you didn't need to go through. ❓ What are you currently reading? I just finished Britney Spears' memoir. I will be jumping into Iron Flame here in a bit. :) ❓ What are you currently playing? Suika Game, Diablo IV, and Pokemon Go. Well, there you go! To all my fellow job seekers- on this Friday, I wanted to share the post by Amit Fulay (thank you!) which came at the right time for me. I hope it provides encouragement to you as well as we wrap up this week, recharge this weekend, and plan our strategic approach for next week. If you are not seeing the results you want, look at your approach and tweak it- try something different to hopefully get different results. This was advice shared with me yesterday and I am taking it to heart. As a job seeker, in my head I know everything Amit is saying is true- and I believe it. The trick is keeping the “emotion” out of it to the extent that is possible, as “rejection” really is not personal and it’s subjective. Continue to show up, be confident in your abilities, look for opportunities to grow and learn and build relationships , be strategic in your approach, and keep on keeping on. We are all much more than our resume or LinkedIn profile- the trick is optimizing these “accessories” to “catch someone’s eye”, but it is the relationships we build and our professional story that will enable us to find that next opportunity.

My application for a paid internship opportunity was rejected due to my WhatsApp profile picture. Let me recount the story and the valuable lessons I learned from it. I applied for an internship under an advocate, and my resume was selected. I was asked to connect with the advocate, but when he didn't answer my call, I messaged him on WhatsApp. He viewed my profile picture, which at the time featured me wearing sunglasses with a black background – a rather funky image. The advocate seemed to form a discounted impression based on my profile picture, and he eventually rejected my application, citing that he had already hired two interns and that my email reached him a bit late. Undeterred, I reached out to him again in the hope of finding other opportunities. He invited me to his office. However, upon seeing me in person, he initially didn't recognize me. After our conversation, he decided to recruit me. A few days later, he revealed why I had initially denied the opportunity and imparted some crucial lessons: ✨ The legal profession is highly judgmental. ✨ Legal professionals make quick judgments about you. ✨ Your appearance is your first impression. ✨ Only a select few advocates belong to the elite class, and if you aspire to join them, you must be extremely cautious. ✨ Remove elements that could create a discounted impression of yourself. My thoughts exactly…when it comes to interviewing and choosing the right role for you. Also, the definition of right role changes as you evolve as a person.
