Authenticity protects brain health “Higher scores on the Authenticity Scale were associated with a larger left precuneous surface area and the lower self-alienation scores were associated with smaller volumes of the left amygdala. These are key default mode regions for supporting self-awareness. Authenticity mediated the relationship between these brain morphological characteristics of reported anxiety suggesting a protective effect of perceived authenticity (how authentic a person feels) on brain health.” This research explored the impact that authenticity had on aging and suggested that being authentic helps us cope with loneliness more effectively. It reduces its impact and makes it less likely we will experience anxiety, depression, physical health symptoms and use alcohol. Most of the people I see in therapy have a desire to live life more authentically. They want to feel “really seen” by those they love. They want to stop hiding parts of themselves that make them feel ashamed. Or they want to make choices in keeping with their own desires rather than those they believe others want them to make. Therapy gives people the chance to practice what it is like to be more authentic. It can feel less risky to explore this in a relationship with a therapist than with your family, friends and colleagues.
