*In person.* It is something that has gone by the wayside since March of 2020, and it also happens to be one of our goals at SWAIR for 2024. Meredith and I plan to do more things "in person" - meet up with different workout crews, have founder coffees IRL, conduct business meetings, you get the gist. Last week, we decided to take a trip to our lab to discuss product development and also watch our next production run live. We hadn't seen a live production run in all 3 years we've been in business. Two notable things happened: 1. We ironed out product development details in less than one hour, and I estimate it would have taken us about 10 emails over 2 weeks. Success. 2. We shook the hands of the men and women on the production line! We watched the bottles get filled! We saw the cool machine that secures the trigger sprays! Then, we watched our labels get applied...and twist...and bubble. Something was wrong with the labels. Failure, but then success. Since we were there in person, we were able to make the executive decision that too many finished bottles were not passing QC, and we needed to stop the production run immediately. We had an impromptu meeting where we reviewed what was happening and put together a list of items to research (Was there a change to the label adhesive that we didn't know about? What if we change the label roll from paper to film? Was this the same machine at the lab that was used for the last production run?). While Meredith and I were bummed that the inventory would be delayed and we had unusable labels, we felt confident in our decision. Had we not been there, the decision would have been made with video or pictures, and I am sure we would have agonized much more about what to do. So, we filled in our label manufacturer about the issue and came up with several stress tests to figure out the issue. And guess what? We're meeting up *in person* to look at samples and discuss next steps.

Behind the Scenes: The Journey of a Fragrance Entrepreneur Today, I want to take you behind the scenes of my fragrance business and share a glimpse into what it takes to bring you the finest scents. As an entrepreneur with a dream of opening a huge departmental store, every step in this process is a blend of passion, dedication, and meticulous planning. While I don’t create the fragrances myself, I get deeply attached when restocking the best scents from top creators around the world. My journey begins with identifying and partnering with reputable fragrance creators known for their quality and unique blends, such as the house of Lattafa and Fragrance World. Selecting the right fragrances involves a lot of research and testing. I spend countless hours researching the types of fragrances. When I visit suppliers to restock, I often come back home with serious catarrh from smelling all the fragrances to ensure they meet the high standards my customers expect. It’s about finding those hidden gems that have the perfect balance of notes and long-lasting appeal. Strong relationships with suppliers are key. Because most suppliers are really busy, I keep track of trends via their social media pages and start preparing money for the next big thing. Staying on top of trends is crucial. Finding my way into such exclusive circles is a whole lot of talk I can’t even get started with right now. These collaborations ensure a steady supply of high-quality fragrances, which is essential for the growth of my business. Marketing is a critical component of the business. I use various platforms to promote the fragrances, from social media to in-store displays. Engaging with customers, understanding their preferences, and receiving their feedback helps me continuously improve my offerings. This journey of sourcing and selling fragrances is a stepping stone toward my ultimate goal – opening a huge departmental store that offers a curated selection of high-quality products. Each fragrance sold today is part of a larger vision, a testament to the hard work and dedication invested in this dream. Running a fragrance business is challenging but incredibly rewarding. It’s a blend of passion, strategy, and a lot of perseverance. As I continue on this journey, I am excited about the future and the endless possibilities it holds. Hello Everyone, I recently attended the Invest Festival 2024 and I learned so much while I was there. Seeing so many other brands and companies out there promoting and selling their product. The vendor market place was so full of life with people and music. We saw many celebrities and people who I had only seen through a screen. More importantly, it was amazing seeing so many black people and people of color wanting to network and learn about business. They had special guest speakers, games, vendors and food trucks. I met with a brand that I had been watching a lot on Youtube called Wrldinvsn, and I also bought a t-shirt from a company called 'Black is Love'. The expected the shirt to cost so when I saw the $60 dollar price tag I wasn't surprised. Being that I want to start a brand as well I purchased the shirt so I can experience what its like to own and wear a shirt at that price. I wanted to know how could I charge that much for my shirts. I found that the style and printing of the shirt is the reason that it cost so much. I found the shirt to be of high quality, and it also attract a lot of compliments. After having conversation with a few people there I found that I was not charging enough for my own brand. I always thought about selling to family and friends, but this experience expanded my horizon to find out who my customers actually are. When you have something you believe in you can not under price it. It cost real money to run a business so you need to make real money to keep it going. Here is a fantastic Orchid that didn't grow the way I expected it to. I had visions of it growing vertically following the original spike that it was secured to. The reality was that it naturally grew toward the sunlight that nurtured it, fighting against the spike. Despite my efforts to keep it growing the way I WANTED it to grow it had different ideas. So the spike was removed. And finally, as if Mother Nature was giving me the gentle 'middle finger' 🤣 it sent roots out of the pot and sent forth the most amazing flowers. I see many business owners doing this, they try to constrain their businesses in the direction they believe will be the most successful e.g. "Everyone will want this...". If they actually relaxed a little bit into what their clients were actually telling them (by their actions) they may very well find that they create their own version of amazing beauty. Just look around you at some of the brands that actually went off in a different direction. Lamborghini started off making tractors. Nintendo started off making playing cards. There are some interesting stories that come from 'customer feedback' Avon started off as a book company. The founder David H. McConnell gave away perfume samples with each book to attract customers. He noticed the perfumes were more popular than the books so switched to selling beauty products. Wrigley started off as a Soap and Baking Powder company. William Wrigley Jr gave away chewing gum as a promotional item with each sale. The gum was more popular than the soap and baking powder so he focused on chewing gum. At the end of the day, my Orchid was not going to turn into a Rose but my point is that sometimes we just have to loosen up a bit, take a step back and realise the beauty in our business may not be exactly where we expect it to be.
