💡⚡ Fantastic news—renewable energy use has more than doubled globally in the last decade. The next step is more efficiently using the energy we already have. 🏟️ Sports stadiums require a great amount of power to run. With the use of fossil fuels on the rise, it’s time for the industry leaders to step-up their energy efficiency and commit to net zero. 👣 Motivated by Paul Hawken’s ideas, our seventh Regeneration Revolution: Sport’s Solutions to Helping End the Climate Crisis blog is focused on implementing sports policies that can help reduce our carbon footprint. On the CO2 emissions from sports… 📺 These days, media is crammed with sport headlines, especially from the ongoing Olympics in France. 🏅 This is the biggest event ever organised in France. Millions of spectators and billions of TV viewers will see athletes performing at their best, setting new world records, winning medals and audiences go wild. 🤝 These large sporting events are great for bringing people together, uniting them through a collective experience. This is of course a positive thing about sports but (and here comes the party pooper) has a flip side to it. 📰 According to The Wire (link in comments), the aim is to keep the CO2 emissions from primarily travels, construction and operations associated with the Paris Olympics to below 1.6 million tonnes. 🌱 If managed, the Paris games will be among the least CO2 polluting Olympics on record. However, looking into the overall sustainability of this kind of sporting event (link in comments), including economic and social aspects on for instance budget balance, public approval, and social safety, the picture might change. Until everything has been accounted for and considered, the jury is still out on this one. ❓ 1.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, can tech solve this? Well, some of the emissions would in theory be possible to capture at source and then permanently store, through CCS technologies, but of course not all. As a thought exercise here, let us instead consider direct air capture and storage (DACS) as a ‘compensation measure’. ❗ Globally, about 10 000 tonnes of CO2 per year are captured directly from the atmosphere and stored in the bedrock at various DACS plants. At this rate, 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝟭𝟲𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗲 for the 2024 Olympic emissions. That’s a long time, for one event. ❗ Given this, it’s (again) clear that emissions need to be drastically reduced over the coming few years. This means no oil and gas expansion and phasing out our current use of fossil fuels. The best emissions are those never emitted in the first place. Tech has problems with upscaling at least in the short-term but is likely to be a piece of the puzzle in the long-term fight against climate change and for a livable planet. #olympics #emissions #CO2 #CCS #DACS #climatechange

So encouraging to see stories of climate action getting picked up in the mainstream media - sport more than most sectors has the power to change the narrative. Early in 2023 we worked with Edgbaston Stadium to forecast the emissions generated by the planned IT20 with New Zealand in September. We then spent 9 months supporting the team to take action to reduce that as much as possible, with a target of -25%. When we completed the actual calculation after the event, we had achieved a reduction of closer to 35% - an amazing effort from all involved but especially Lydia Carrington who lead from the front. The approach provides a template for other sports venues to follow (link to the full report in the BBC story) but more importantly has kicked of a next phase of work creating a Net Zero Sports Venue program, in collaboration with key sector partners and government. More news to follow soon or get in touch if you'd like to get involved Net Zero Now Urgency | Action | Collaboration #netzero #climateaction

🌟 Welcome to the Future of Sports Arenas! 🌍🏟️ Imagine a world where our love for sports goes hand-in-hand with our commitment to the environment. Introducing the concept of an Eco-Friendly Sports Arena—a vision of the future where sports and sustainability unite in perfect harmony. This futuristic stadium can be powered entirely by renewable energy sources like solar panels and wind turbines. The green roofs not only enhance the aesthetics but also contribute to better air quality and energy efficiency. Every aspect of the arena can be designed with sustainable materials, proving that we can enjoy world-class sports while protecting our planet. This isn’t just a dream—it’s the direction we should be heading. As we cheer for our favourite teams, let’s also support innovations that keep our earth thriving. 🌱💚 #SustainableSports #GreenEnergy #EcoFriendly #SportsAndEnvironment #RenewableEnergy #GreenArchitecture #FutureOfSports #SustainabilityInSports #EnvironmentalInnovation

https://lnkd.in/gC7BWayN "If you've not heard, essentially, the athletes' village was designed and built to be cooled via a geothermal cooling system that pumps water from 50-70m below the surface to keep the athletes cool, so long as they follow a few simple rules such as keeping window blinds shut during the day. The system is similar to the district cooling network that's successfully been keeping buildings and landmarks across Paris cool even despite ferocious heatwaves. This story is one that's playing out every day Unfortunately, faith in this technology wavered, and many teams, including those from Britain, Germany, Italy, Japan, Canada and USA, elected to buy portable air-conditioning units to supplement the geothermal cooling. This was met with dismay as it tipped the playing field in favour of the wealthier nations' competitors, as those that had the budgets to cover the additional AC units enjoyed high-energy active cooling, and those that didn't suffered hotter temperatures. The Olympics is an extraordinary event, but this story is one that's playing out every day. It typifies climate inaction: a low-emissions solution is proposed (or even implemented); fear that it might cause inconvenience or discomfort takes root; those with the means to opt for a high-emissions business-as-usual solution choose not to risk it; greenhouse gases are emitted and inequality prevails. How do we break this cycle?"
"The Paris Olympic Village air-conditioning debacle is a perfect illustration of the barriers to climate action"

Paris 2024 presents advance in its low carbon strategy Paris 2024 has set itself the goal of halving the carbon footprint of the Games compared with the average of London 2012 and Rio 2016. Less than a month before the Games begin, it is presenting the latest developments regarding its climate commitments in two key areas: reduction of Games-related emissions and support for carbon avoidance and capture projects. Director | Driving investment into Natural Capital and Landscape Restoration | Green Finance | Community Forests trustee
How many times this winter was your kids' football training cancelled because of a sodden training pitch, or has your golfing been severely curtailed because fairways are under inches of water?? Sport England have recognised this with their new funding package to help grassroots sport invest in renewable technology and nature-based solutions to tackle climate resilience. There are lots of ways to get involved, but if you have land that could support more trees to help with natural Flood Management, then get in touch with Englands Community Forests who can help with woodland planning, tree procurement, planting and maintenance. https://lnkd.in/eqS5AiPH
