We are proud to announce that our special issue in the International Criminal Law Review on Dictators and Dissidents has recently been published! In this issue we (Maartje Weerdesteijn & I) look at nonviolent resistance movements as ways to hold dictatorial regimes accountable when other alternatives fail. We are incredibly grateful that Caroline Fournet offered us the opportunity to publish this issue and work on this always relevant and ever-changing topic. We were honored to receive contributions from amazing scholars who shed light on the different actors, contexts and tactics that influence the dynamics between dictators and dissidents. Kjersti Lohne addresses the changing, and increasingly restricted, role of dissident NGOs in international criminal justice. Stephen McLoughlin discusses the role of Kenneth Kuanda’s personal ideology in his regime’s response to nonviolent resistance in Zambia. Srdja Popovic, Slobodan Djinovic and Edin Mujkic reflect on their own experiences in building OTPOR!, the resistance movement that ousted Milosevic, and outline their key strategies and tactics. Fatma Zaki Khalil and Jacquelien van Stekelenburg highlight different paths that lead individuals to become dissidents, with examples from their research in Egypt. Barbora Hola and Mark Drumbl then conclude the issue by challenging the dichotomy between regime and resistance and outlining the everyday motivations to resist collaboration in communist Czechoslovakia. All of the contributions (including our introduction to the special issue) can be found here:

https://lnkd.in/dDn8wC4d It was with great pleasure that I collaborated on this book and wrote the piece, "Sentimento do Mundo" - On the Endless Struggle for a Justice System “This open access book discusses the state of rule of law protection in Europe, by considering recent challenges to judiciary independence in EU countries. The purpose of the book is to advance solutions to such challenges. It looks at the challenges from the perspective of EU law and ECHR law and puts forward solutions for its improvement and paths of action to be taken by EU political institutions to solve the problems. The book consists of communications presented by leading European scholars, judges and prosecutors, in a conference in Lisbon, organised by Prof. Paulo Pinto de Albuquerque and Judge Filipe Marques.”

A new paper on Colombia, its transitional justice processes and relation to institutions of international criminal justice is out, from the pen of Camilo Tamayo Gomez. Here, Camilo outlines how (with a dash of magical legalism) Colombia has been navigating and contributing actively to a complex multi-level rule of law system following its experience of long term conflict. https://lnkd.in/evsuZEd3 This is the third of the individual papers destined for a special issue of the International Criminal Law Review special issue on states and international criminal justice produced under EU COST Association - European Cooperation in Science and Technology action CA18228. Keep your eyes peeled for more - there are several more in the proofing pipeline, and a few more beyond that too. #Law #Scoiology #TransitionalJustice #ICJ #ICL #ICC #Colombia #Peace #Justice [Edited for general DOI link]
