Colors of Humanity Art Gallery - "WET PAINT" 2024 Call for Entry - Online Art Show - THEME- "Wet Paint" This show is open to any subject matter as long as it uses any type of paint. PAY IT FORWARD- We will be donating 10% of all entry fees from this show to Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Colors of Humanity Art Gallery, LLC is not affiliated with Habitat for Humanity. ELIGIBILITY- All artists 18 and over may enter. MEDIA- artwork must contain some form and amount of PAINT JUDGING CRITERIA- Originality, interpretation, quality, demonstration of ability, and usage of medium JUROR- Janelle Cogan ENTRY FEE- $20 for 1 or 2 pieces (You may enter more than once if you have additional works.) AWARDS- A cash prize will be given to the Best of Show winner. Additionally, the Best of Show winner will be featured. His or her artwork will be on the cover of the show and it will be largely displayed with an article about them and their work. Other winners will be featured and have similar recognition. All accepted works will be displayed with the artist name, title of work, and a link back to their website, or email address if they do not have a website. Murals. Sculptures. And more. Lots of public art. Public art is where I spend a big chunk of my time. I work with communities and organizations to provide public art opportunities for artists. I also make some public art. I've found I prefer working in the public art world. The "canvases" are much larger - sidewalks, sides of buildings, etc.. Your art is seen by a wider range of audience on a daily basis. Public art perks up everyone's day.  Finding opportunities to exhibit your work doesn't have to be limited to traditional gallery spaces. Am I saying, "Ignore the galleries!"? Of course not. But as an artist it makes sense to think beyond the "four white walls". That being said, stay tuned. I have some gallery exhibits showcasing new work coming up later this year. So while I'm a big proponent of public art, galleries are still part of the "being an artist" equation. I've recently been sitting down with Craig Tirey of Slow Down Cowboy studios at Front Street in Dayton, Ohio. We've been recording a podcast series interviewing Dayton artists about being an artist. The topic of alternative venues arises frequently. It is interesting hearing how different artists are finding ways to show (and sell) their art and skills. A friend recently visited our local museum of contemporary art (CMASD) and saw two of the three pieces of art you see below. Excited as she was by the visit, I asked for some details. Her share motivated me to write this post and create the montage below. #1) of course, is Michelangelo’s David, permanently located in Florence, Italy, which once almost anyone sees in person, they will never forget . . . #2) The middle piece, which she didn't clearly recall seeing until I showed her a photo on the museum’s website . . . #3) The simple abstract, which was so enriching, she recalled it well enough to sketch out a rough diagram of it for me! Though she rarely enjoys abstract art, something made it possible for that 3-color 1963 painting by Ellsworth Kelly to stick in her mind in a way she was visibly able to show it to me. . . Wow! What made such a difference? It turns out she was part of a guided tour. What made that tour so memorable was the explanation she heard from the guide that completely altered the way she experienced each piece of art. That’s what good context provides: insight, relevance, meaning, and value. How can we best do this for the people with whom we share things? Here’s a simple, proven, basic three-step process: 1) Offer a visual image (like a sketch or photo) to add clarity. 2) Explain or share what’s invisible: the intention, challenge or unique feature beneath what’s obvious. 3) Ask the person with whom you’re sharing a question like:          How do you see this? What does this mean to you? What’s your own take-away? Just as perception is subjective, so is clarity!  Call or write me if you’d like to help others enjoy greater clarity faster through increased visual thinking. Fancy an arty start to your week? (Of course you do, it's World Art Day!) Here's a super-quick (and slightly sweary) masterclass on how to create the perfect gallery wall. It's easy when you know how... 1. Select your art. Start with just a handful of pieces, so it doesn't feel too overwhelming. 2. Lay your art on the floor, to help you visualise the arrangement. 3. Start by hanging your focal piece of art and work from there. 4. Keep an equal distance between frames to keep your artwork from looking too cluttered. 5. Play with different shapes and sizes to add visual interest. Don't feel you need to stick to prints, either. Your home, your rules! 😍

The Unspoken Vocabulary of Art: A special sense of vision re-creates a daydream. What you see is a non-hallucination of a prefigurement. I know you're thinking to yourself what the heck does that mean. Well, it's a parody. Or another way of saying it… its high falutin art talk. This is the kind of speak you hear when the high-level art dealers talk about art. Well, this may be a bit of an exaggeration. . The painting you have before you on your magic screen is complex. Multifaceted in all of its thousands of brush strokes of glory. Collectively they all seem to be holding the composition together. Even providing the luxury of descending orbs on a busy bronzed, blowsy highway leading to nowhere. . The grandstanding background assembly is a congregation of green and yellow squares cueing to the viewer that there could be a rally around a face peering back. Here’s a tip. The awkward triangle in the lower third represents the mouth. . The unspoken vocabulary of art. Withdrawn in the mind. What you see is never what you really get. It's natural to want to force a vocabulary onto a work of art, but so much of art, and the creativity that goes into it can be cunningly vague. Some works of art are naturally disagreeable and quietly rail against commentary. I believe art spends a great deal of time talking to itself. After all, when the lights go out in a home or a museum, it’s left alone in the dark to entertain itself. . “A rancorous piece of my mind. I verbally hurled to the painting before me.
